It's the new culinary creation sweeping America. A butter board is a spin on a traditional charcuterie board. Butter is spread on a cutting board and decked out with colorful, delicious ingredients. It all started when a post from food influencer Justine Doiron went viral. But not everyone is on board with the new food trend. The Los Angeles Times called the trend "totally disgusting" and others say the boards are "unhygienic."

  • I agree that using a wooden cutting board could be unhygienic but I find it sort of cute that her board is in the shape of a piece of toast
  • It seems like a weird idea to me but different strokes for different folks.
  • To avoid unhygienic preparation of this sort, one has to assign a board exclusive only for this purpose-butter board, much like when you assign different cutting boards exclusive only for meats, fish and vegetables respectively. Seems interesting to me! This is definitely my next project!

It's only unhygienic if you use a used wooden board 💀 Edit : My theory is that woods have fibres that can trap bacteria in it

We live in the United States of A’Murica, home of large scale fast food restaurant chains and grocery stores filled with aisles upon aisles of candies, pops, and frozen meals, but the first thing you want to be concerned about is a butter board?
  • People just need to relax. It’s a treat you may have occasionally. No one’s gonna have a heart attack. Not a bad idea
  • Never heard of this before. No different than a bowl of salsa being shared with the fam. I’m not afraid.
  • It would make more sense of the butter was just mashed up in a bowl to be more spreadable than garnished with all the toppings/spices. I thought studies were done on cutting boards and wooden boards don’t allow for pathogens to grow that it’s naturally antibacterial
  • I have literally never heard of this until now. And I’m not surprised cuz it looks absolutely ridiculous.
  • Still true today as proven by the critics- “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time”.
  • That’s too much butter for so many Americans that have heart problems 🥴
  • For years I’ve made personal butter boards and felt like a fat ass…..now it’s trendy?! Of course. Now my butter board consisted of some butter slapped on a paper plate, sprinkled with garlic salt and accompanied with an entire French bread from Walmart for me to eat alone in my room. But ya know. Same thing.
  • Well I love it. I’d only do it for family dinners and get togethers though. The “ heart attack “ comment was so 🙄 Like, it’s up to you how much butter you eat not the way it’s served.
  • I think it looks cute but if you were to use a spoon or spatula to pick it up, put it in a plate and then use it as spread or dipping that would be so much better!

Solution: Don't use a wooden board, don't double dip, and don't eat too much. There now the Captain Complainers can go back to minding their own business.
  • If the board is non-porus, and the butter is spread from a utensil rather that digging the bread into the board, then it would be more hygienic. But, you're still eating a ton of butter.
  • 1:09 I love how they’ll make a big fuss about this but won’t do anymore once the next “trend” starts. And I’m sure this is healthier than a lot of other fast food joint depending on what ingredients you use and if you put this on a plate
