I am installing a new toilet wax ring to an existing old commode. I am using a rubber ring instead of the traditional wax ring. This new toilet wax ring is made by fluidmaster, it is called "Better than wax" universal toilet wax ring. It has the word wax in it, but there is no wax at all. It works great, easy to install and no worry about messy sticky wax.

Use the spacer. For two reasons: that flange looks more level than above the floor line and the foam spacer ring will compress under the weight of the toilet and hardware securing it to the flange.
