I break down the meaning of nine core whistles used by the Seraphites (Scars) in The Last of Us Part II. The secret whistle language is a testament to Naughty Dog's outstanding sound design team who did an amazing job with this.

00:00 Opening
00:30 1) The Call, and 2) The Answer
01:09 3) Light Alert (I think I heard or saw something)
01:54 4) The Called Shot Whistle (Old Hunter's Tactic)
03:09 5) Enemy Ambush (Initial Contact with the Enemy)
03:41 6) High Alert (I don't have eyes on the enemy)
04:09 7) Enemy Found (Scars find you on High Alert)
04:46 8) Moving Up (Cover me!)
05:16 9) Man Down (One of ours has fallen)

A friend of mine told me that if we ever end up in a post apocalyptic world that we should try to learn the whistles of the Seraphites.
  • @12sylviahong
Felt like I just learned a new language in 8 minutes. This is mindblowing.
  • @siboraremy9135
If you learn the whistles it can be used in combat against scars. That's literally so cool.
  • @Marlesden
the fact that this game went so into detail on this is pretty incredible
  • @gateswings2592
The dislikes are the scars, I doubt they're happy about this info being leaked
  • @kauansantos7293
Currently on my third playthrough, and now on Grounded, these whistles are even more terrifying!
  • @jeannekepaan
Have you noticed how the "Call and answer" whistles sound like "Where aaaare you?" (Call) and "Over here!" (Answer)?'
  • @RinasaurusRex
I like the call and response whistle. Sounds like they're going "Where are you?"/"Over here!"
  • @A_Crumplebottom
The whistle language is such an innovative design by the dev's of the game.
  • @amrotography
Fun fact: a village in Turkey actually still uses the "whistle" language till this day. Mind-blowing.
  • Honestly, you mentioned the "Man down" whistle being the most chilling because of how loud and sharp it is. But personally, the thing that gets me the most about it is the synchronized utterance of "Fallen" whenever you let it play out. You'll seriously get 5-6 Seraphites saying it in perfect synchronicity in the exact same tone. It's crazy.

It would've been cool if Abby learned the whistles from Yara or Lev and she used it against the seraphites
  • I didn’t realize seraphites do a specific whistle before they attack. It’s kinda like DOSHO from Ghost of Tsushima
  • @CDRaff
It's cool how the "man down" whistle is a straight tone, and the "I'm relaying that a man is down" whistle has that slight upturn at the end.
  • @Mollito2007
The first whistle I heard surprised me. But when no one spoke and they kept whistling, that's when it terrified me.
  • @the_jexer
When Yara whistled I had a flashback of all the fights I had with the Scars 😂
  • @Nick-cy2tn
One of the creepiest enemies in a game, when you first encounter them in the park it's scary af

Thanks so much for fulfilling my request, Wolf! You really outdid yourself with this analysis–it's a must-watch for anybody who likes this game. Your thoroughness was also great since you showed multiple examples of each call in action. The whistles (and their AI) are also more complex than I thought, especially how the "man down" whistle is carried across the entire group to reach distant ears. Thanks for producing this valuable resource. It's high time I gave you a sub, friend.

This is so detailed! Didn’t even realize there were that many whistle calls. Thanks for the video :))
