A playthrough of Capcom's 1994 license-based platformer/beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse.

X-men: Mutant Apocalypse is among my favorite X-men games ever, right alongside Children of the Atom, which coincidentally enough was also released by Capcom in 1994 but in arcades.

This SNES gem really exemplifies how on-top of their game Capcom was when it came to developing for the SNES. The graphics look awesome, with huge, well animated sprites and detailed backgrounds that all look right in line with their source material. The soundtrack rocks, and is easily the among the best Mega Man X soundtracks on the SNES after the first.... okay, so it's not a MMX soundtrack, but it sounds like it could have/should have been with its rock beats and heavily abused guitar samples.

The gameplay is truly what makes the game shine, though. The combat hybridizes standard 2D platforming with fighting controls from Street Fighter II, and it works beautifully. The moves are all well balanced, easy to pull off, and make things more interesting than merely smashing the Y-button until your thumb falls off. I also love that MMX's stage select has been adapted here - the choice of stage order is pretty nice since it allows you to play many times over without getting completely fed up playing the first few levels again and again. That having been said, it's not likely that you'd have to - its actually pretty easy for a non-Disney Capcom action game. It's not a total cakewalk, but it was made pretty accessible to all players, not just experts.

If you haven't taken on this X-Men title, do yourself a favor and try it out. In my mind, it's by far the best 16-bit X-Men title, even besting the (quite good) Genesis titles by a fair margin.

And to anyone that wants to draw the comparison: no, it's nothing like MK Mythologies. The mere suggestion is an insult to this game.

For you kids out there, Psylocke was the original thickness.

Capcom really worked their magic on Mutant Apocalypse. It's easily one of the best X-Men games ever made!

It’s funny, this game captured the spirit of what x-men is all about more than some of the movies.

Back when I was kid, seeing Sentinel burst through the elevator like that for the first time was one of the most amazing things ever in this game, that and seeing Brood Queen. Apocalypse's stage theme was and still is phenomenal. I used love playing this and War of Gems, my friends and would take turns playing and would sometimes designate who would play who. Great games and good times.

This game had bits of every good game from Capcom: Megaman X´s music, Demon´s Crest sound effects and gritty atmosphere, Street Fighter moves and huge colorful sprites, Final Fight gameplay, and a good difficulty and addictive fun factor.

I love how Wolverine is just like "forever alone" at the end, lol

Random memory - I remember renting this the day we got out for winter break in 1994 and it kept me busy until Christmas. Great game, Capcom-y as all hell.

So much nostalgia! It blew my mind there was a “true” ending if you go straight through without passwords. I marathoned the game, and always have since then.
  • Magneto is so dramatic, lol. I was reading his talking in his 90s cartoon voice, 😅

Like if you have this game on SNES.

I remember being a kid and seeing my 14 yr old brother play this like nothing! Always had to sneak in a game or two when he wasn’t around lol By far one of the best games from the 90s.

Glad to see that bouncing between enemies as Beast and Psylocke was the norm 🤣 . This game was the bomb, I got it in summer of 95 and immediately got immersed in it. Gambit and Psylocke were my faves.

Remember when comics were fun and we trusted Marvel with their own properties? Here you go!

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting HEAVY MegaMan X vibes from the soundtrack?

That was the "Magia" of Capcom in their Golden Era, too bad these times will never Return.

Great example of a hybrid of a platformer and beat-em-up. Nice play here.
