Can it jump? Rock crawl? Survive the whoops? Conquer the sand dunes? In short, can the Tesla Cybertruck REALLY off-road?

Viral videos of it struggling on mild inclines tell us ‘no’.

But armed with a Cybertruck featuring Tesla’s latest off-road software update that finally allows you to lock the diffs, we took it – together with a Rivian R1T as a benchmark – to the middle of the Californian desert to find out.

Over to Top Gear Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Jack Rix, and Head of Car Testing, Ollie Marriage, to give us all an answer…

Stay tuned for Tesla Cybertruck vs Rivian R1T off-road drag race + Tesla vs Rivian camping setup videos later this week!
  • I like british guys yelling "Conquered" in middle of nowhere US

been years since I watched Top Gear... after stumbling upon this one... I really just feel that I missed the good old trio days....

Finally someone addresses tire pressure. All those videos criticizing the off-road capabilities of any EV truck need to acknowledge the tires have higher psi ratings for efficiency on the road. Off-road generally goes better if you release pressure from the tires so they are able to compliantly spread load over irregular terrain.
  • A proper safety inspection up on a lift for both trucks after this event would tell us how well they held up. You can break a lot of things and not realize it till a week or so later. Cracks and bends takes time to present themselves.
  • If it was the old top gear, Jeremy will surely pit it against an actual monstruck or at least a Raptor
  • @Vartazian360
Should have brought a standard ICE 4x4 truck to show how it does in comparison..
  • @Brotherbear75
Wish you brought an 80s Land Cruiser along for a standard
  • I'm probably never going to rock crawl or overland, but that was actually fun to watch.
  • @rbfarrell1
Wow, those trucks are strong. That much weight and landed very well.
  • I don't know about standard tires. From what I heard the tires on the Cybertruck are produced specifically for the Cybertruck, so they are probably expensive as hell. The Rivian does impressive rooster tails!

That yakima rack shows the difference between static and dynamic load ratings and why you need a proper roof rack instead of load bars when mounting a rooftop tent. Cant just slap a rooftop tent on something and call it overland ready.
  • Crazy how many haters are in these comments. Just blinded by hatred instead of seeing the technology and practicality of the products here. Both are great. We should applaud this forward movement. Just observe without bias and you’ll see
  • I'm mostly impressed by the fact that those roof top tent bolts and brackets withstood that
  • @Herotiger
This is the kind of Top Gear content I was expecting!
  • @Redswipe
@09:23 "this one feels springier and bouncier than the Cybertruck" yeah, because you were going way faster and finished 20s quicker.
