Today we take a closer look at the Shield Generators of the Imperial Star Destroyer, and I make the argument that they aren't as dumb as you think! All that and more on today's Star Wars video!

Question: Why the Micky Mouse ears on the Star Destroyers? Answer: Foreshadowing.
  • Eck: criticizes the ISD Everyone: yup, agreed Eck: finds the logical reasoning behind the ISD design Everyone: Yup, agreed

My inner 1940s US Navy Admiral: I find your lack of anti aircraft Disturbing
  • You touch on it in the video, and I actually loved how the reason droidekas had personal shields but clone troopers didn't is because the radiation from the shield generator would kill organic beings
  • I always thought that they prioritize the lives of officers on the bridge over the rest of the ship... cause thats what imperials do lol
  • @nickkurzy2246
Eck: "Why the Mickey Mouse ears on the ISD?" Me: "please never say those words again." As for alternate placement of the shield bulbs I would suggest on the Superstructure tier at the base of the bridge right above the main turbolaser batteries or perhaps on the underside of the bridge wings. this way the angles from which they can be attacked is reduced from nearly 360 degrees to around 180. Also they are much closer to the defensive batteries and the bridge does not obscure firing angles.
  • After playing squadrons you realize how hard it can actually be to get anywhere near those shields
  • @GmodPlusWoW
"the shields are stored in the balls" Good god, that's a meme and a half.

The most important thing in star wars on from starfighters to capital ships is the shield in my opinion

If I were to change where the shield generator is located I'd move them to the "Throat" of the bridge tower, around where it connects to the main body of the Star Destroyer. Then I'd adjust the gun placement a tad, move one grouping to a little above the shield generator on the Bridge tower. Basically I am making it so that to hit the shield generator you basically have to fly directly through the biggest crossfire of all my guns.

The whole "keep things away from crew because of radiation" thing exists in modern vehicles too, specifically with radar systems. Even the weather radar that's in modern airliners emits enough radiation to cause permanent injury if directly exposed at close range; that's why it's located in the plane's nose cone, pointed away from where the people are in the plane'z cabin. The radars aren't allowed to be used on the ground except in designated testing areas, where a cone over 100 feet out is cleared of all animal life to prevent injury. Being 50 feet in front of a plane when the weather radar is turned on can cause infertility in seconds, and radiation sickness in just a couple minutes. That's also why the radar on ships is located high above the deck. It creates a safe zone under the tower where directed radiation is focused above where any people can be expected to be.

The next question becomes "How do ship reactors in Star Wars work?" I'm guessing like a pinch reactor from Halo
  • @own4801
Answer: It works effectively until it fails horrifically on screen.
  • @ssfbob456
One of the Halo books discusses how the Covenant ships have their bridge buried in the ship because it's so important, and they even make fun of the UNSC for making the bridge on human ships so easily targeted.

"Maybe it'd be even better to have it behind the neck, sort of at the NAPE" Mikasa and Levi breathing heavily
  • @isaackim7675
Palpatine (Rise of Skywalker), "I will not make the same mistake again." Resistance, "Hold my proton torpedoes."
  • @AndrewSmoot
I don't know if Arvel was suicidal as much as he simply didn't have great control of his A-wing.
  • Something else worth bringing up is that the Imperials were badly overstretched, not having the logistics to actually maintain all the ships they made. As the Shields are rather critical, making them easy to repair makes sense even if it makes the Shields more vulnerable.
  • @josephstalin839
They need to create a updated plan to internally place the projectors inside them ship.
