Howells: Rhapsody No 3 | John Challenger, Salisbury Cathedral

Published 2022-07-08
Rhapsody No 3 by Herbert Howells, played on the organ of Salisbury Cathedral.

Howells wrote this third Rhapsody over the course of a single night in York, March 1918, during a Zeppelin raid on that city. Howells had been appointed by Walter Alcock as sub-organist of Salisbury Cathedral in 1917, following his studies at the Royal College of Music. However, he had to give up this position after only three months, owing serious health complications. Howells was staying with Edward Bairstow during March 1918 and may well have had the York Minster organ in mind (or indeed, Salisbury's Father Willis organ) when composing the Rhapsody.
