December 1974

A TWA boeing 727 descends through the murky clouds on a snowy December morning. In a few short minutes, the flight crew will deliver their 85 passengers to Washington. As turbulence rocks the plane from side to side, the pilots grow increasingly confused about where they are supposed to be. Minutes previously, a misunderstanding had developed between them, and the air traffic controller who had been guiding them in. This simple misunderstanding, will soon snowball into a full blown catastrophe, which will shake the aviation industry to its core.

This is the story of TWA Flight 514.

The sad reality is that almost all of these rules and amendments have been written in bloody ink. I am so sorry for the victims we have had and will have.
  • I picked up the remote to watch a Netflix show as there was no other option. Then I got a notification that you just dropped a new video. I sunk in the couch, picked up the chips. Safe to say, that's a made evening!

Interesting fact: There was another 727 that crashed on the same day as TWA 514, which was Northwest Orient 6231.
  • @apgardude
Well done, thank you. As a pilot, every time I hear "Maintain 2,000 until established, cleared ILS approach", I think of this crash. That ATC verbiage is the enduring legacy of this crash.

I was expecting to hear 'low terrain' alert. So I guess this was the technology that was missing those days

27:27 Thank you so much for doing the analysis that I've been asking for. I will never forget that day. I had just left DC and was headed south on I-95 in a snowstorm. I heard on the radio about the crash and in a panic managed to get off on an exit to a telephone. My boyfriend was scheduled to come home on that flight after a visit with his father, who was ill. But he canceled his reservation because sadly, his father had died and, in doing so, saved his son's life. Folks around here think the flight unearthed a secret government installation on Mt. Weather and some people say you can't hike there without hearing the ghosts of TWA 514.

As a commercial pilot, I can't begin to describe the mix of enjoyment and terror your videos evoke! They're incredibly insightful yet concise. Every time a new video appears in my feed, it sparks a surge of excitement. Thank you for your outstanding content! Please guys subscribe to give this guy what he deserves!

Babe Wake Up ! Green Dot Aviation Dropped Another banger
  • @greenockscatman
Confirmation bias man, it's a hell of a thing. Especially if you've done something many times before and never given any cause to think things are going to be different this time around. Tragic.
  • @HeaanLasai
American air travel in the 60s-90s was buking wild!
  • @stellahyper8072
Just came here to say that the production quality and the storytelling techniques in these videos are insanely good! I just found this channel about 2 months ago and have already watched all of the videos, some - multiple times. I've loved planes since my first flight as a child 10 years ago and this series inspired me to finally start researching the technical side of how various plane components operate. Keep up the good work, can't wait for more videos!

  • @PauperJ
The blues and yellows aligned, Green Dot is back, whoo hoo!

16:15 - The old "look squirrel" mistake so many smart people make. Finish one thought before moving on to the next. This is hard to train out of people. Even harder with smart confident people.
  • This is by far my favourite youtube channel. Honestly I put it on for ASMR reasons every night to fall alseep lol i know that sounds morbid however your mans voice ans choice of soundtracks is incredibly soothing. On a brighter note it actually also made me get over my fear of flying strangly enough "facing your fears" and given me a new unexpected appreciation for the incredibly interesting world of aviation. Thank you green dot its shocking how your videos have made a really positive impact on my life!
  • @timjames6703
Yesssss been rewatching your old videos so good to have a fresh one. Quality is always excellent.
  • @2x477
Thank you for your outstanding work and dedication. It is a shame that there is seemingly always a cost of human life required before serious changes are adopted and implemented in the entire industry. RIP for all victims and their loved ones!
  • @beauthaven6280
These videos get me through the school day. As soon as I saw a new video I immediately watched all of it during class 😂
