Many items in the house and workshop are made of plastic. These plastics stretch and break over time, and most people throw away their broken plastic items. However, since plastic is a material that melts easily, you can easily repair it with plastic welding or soldering. If you have broken plastic items and you want to throw them away, be sure to watch this video called Repair your broken plastics with plastic welding method and learn how to repair your broken, cracked plastics.

  • Some years ago, I was having a problem repairing some plastic part of a car interior. I just couldn't find a glue that seemed to work as I didn't know for sure what type of plastic was used. I discussed the problem with one of my company's material scientists. His suggestion was to get some scrapings from an unseen area of the part or another part of the same material. He said to then mix it with acetone as acetone is a universal plastic solvent. Using that method, I had the perfect glue, one made from the same plastic as the original part. I have used that method many times with great success.

Love to see what the integrity of the 'bond' is between the melted zip tie and target plastic. under repeat stress & ambient temperature changes. Just because the 2 plastics might be of the same native polymer compound doesn't necessarily indicate that they will function after or tolerate melting without permanent destruction of their original material properties. One class of plastics can be melted & reshaped; another cannot.
  • I've been doing this ever since i learned to solder 25 years ago, it just made sense, no one showed me how and for those zip tie haters it's actually a really good bond with most plastics and is my go too plastic welding material.

for those who want to repeat: You must use same polymer to use this technique... (letters in a recycling triangle, PP - Polypropylene (plastic sewer pipes), PA - Polyamid "neylon" (plastic clamp as in the video) е.т.с.) to increase strength - you can melt a paper clip into plastic, having previously degreased it. don't overheat polymer to color change! Goodluck!
  • Been doing this since the 70s. Even gas tanks, can, water bottles, oil bottles, plastic appliances, all types of plastic things etc... works great !
  • I've been repairing cracked motorcycle cowlings like this for 30 yrs. plus. Works great with like colored wire zip ties. I do the underside first then if needed the top side. Just as strong as it was before.
  • Very beautiful and functional. Sometimes such things can be done by using an easy method and using creativity. Thanks for training and sharing your experience.👏
  • That is a really handy and useful hack! Thanks a lot for sharing!!!
  • I repaired synthesizers for 36 years which often had broken plastic case parts that were obsolete. I found that some plastics melted and fused very well across the cracks, but other plastics cool brittle and cracked right away again. A top layer of E6000 hobby cement worked extremely well as it is a self leveling cement. It would dry hard as a rock and keep the plastic cracks together better than just melting did. Be careful where it goes as once it cures, it is impossible to peel off.

Me encanta la gente tan ingeniosa y tan habil ! 👏🏼👏🏼🙌🙌👍🏼
  • Many comments identify the need to use identical repair material . Forty years ago I trained in plastic welding . The easiest way to identify different types sans markings is to set it alight to observe how it burned , flame colour , drips , burning drips , smoke colour etc etc . From the comments I've learned some useful sounding alternatives as well . U Tube is so informative .

  • Done this for years with plastic automotive parts however, I never thought of adding the plastic zip-tie for filler, brilliant! Mental note.

This repair should be sturdy enough; however, drilling a small hole (maybe about 1\16 of an inch) at the each end of crack (even if you fill it up with plastic to seal it up, it will prevent the crack from extending further. The hole interrupts the crack from continuing in the same direction. This is a technique used in steel forgery to correct problems with cracks or where the potential for cracking might be. Some circular saw blades have these also designed between certain teeth locations.
