Inside the Forgotten War in Darfur, Where the Killing Never Stopped

DARFUR, Sudan — The jagged peaks of the Jebel Marra mountains rise suddenly out of an endless stretch of desert in western Sudan’s Darfur region. Rebel soldiers, many of whom came here to fight against the government nearly 20 years ago, man their posts.

Today civilians here live in relative safety after decades of war, but these mountaintop villages are completely cut off from the rest of Sudanese society. To many, trauma from decades of bombs dropped on them by their own government is compounded by their total isolation.

A team from VICE News are the first outside journalists to access the last rebel stronghold in Jebel Marra in five years. What we found is an area still completely cut off from Sudan and still functionally at war. Nearly a year after a historic revolution toppled President Omar al-Bashir, some in Jebel Marra haven’t even heard he is no longer in power.

  • I maybe not from a wealthy country( from Nairobi, Kenya) but I'm eternally grateful for the security and the peace that I have in my country...without peace nothing is possible...absolutely NOTHING!..I feel so sorry for them..I hope the new government brings them peace and prosperity...

As a Sudanese, I would like to thank you very much for this documentary. It really tells the story from the perspective of the people of Darfur who have suffered for decades. Most of our TV channels did not and will not narrate such a documentary, because it supports the former Omar al-Bashir party (the National Conference), or as we call them "Kizan". I am really grateful for this. It means a lot.

This was painful to see. As a Sudanese living in the capital I had no knowledge of this happening and I feel ashamed that I was mislead by the government's propaganda at the time about these people. I hope they find justice and prosperity in the country that we as the people reclaimed as one 🌹🌹🌹.

I feel so sad for people who have to live like that everyday it shouldn't be that way

I remember "Save Darfur" campaigns at my school back in 2006-7. 13 years later, still no changes 😔
  • I'm Sudanese and live in the capital. For work, we usually travel around Sudan to document agricultural success and what not for non-profit organisations. The fact that they were able to EVEN ACCESS JABAL MARRA IS HUGE FUCKING DEAL!! Whenever we attempted to come close to Marra, they'd send us back around. Mad props to VICE for pulling this off.
  • Vice is improving cause they starting to look at the comment sections. I hope they keep on showing major global issues.

Man...by far the most rational and reasonable list of demands I've ever heard from a rebel leader...

That woman with the rifle fighting for her life and her childrens is the true representation of a powerful woman.
  • To literally sit here and watch this knowing you can’t help them is haunting me
  • Honestly thank God we have Vice to inform us on the things "official" news womt cover
