I think what Jonny is saying is not what Magic couldā€™ve accomplished had he not retired, but what he did accomplish in the time that he did play.

The "weak west" is a weak argument for a couple reasons. First of all, while the west was probably the weaker conference it wasn't dramatically weaker, like it was during points int the 2000's/2010's. Secondly, if you're still winning most of the time you get to the finals it doesn't matter if you're conference was weaker because you still proved your team was the best in the entire league. If you're getting to the finals and getting swept or dominated, then there is an argument that your team only got to the finals because your conference was so weak.

I still got Magic my number 1. Man has a finals MVP as a rookie.

The comments are going to disrespect Magic Johnsonā€¦Wardell Stephen Curry to me is the better player but people who act as if Magic Johnson was chopped liver have no idea what they are discussing. Wardell Stephen Curry just happens to be one of the few talents ever that happened to be better than Magic Johnson.

For me it's Magic over Curry. I don't think bringing up aids was a cop out because the fact that almost every basketball player became fearful of Magic just for having that S.T.D. especially during the aids epidemic... that they forced him to retire because the players felt uncomfortable and didn't want Magic touching the ball or them... And after watching the NBA Dream team doc it's obvious that Magic was still in his prime and still wanted to play basketball. so in 12 years Magics career is very similar to Jordan's in the sense that it's almost virtually flawless. Curry is only faster better ball handler and a better shooter than Magic, but Magic has Curry beat in my opinion when it comes to playmaking, passing, and had a much better IQ. Magic was also a pass first guy that knew when it was time for him to score like a Jokic (although Jokic to me is like Larry Bird meets Dirk). Also he won his first championship his rookie season.

One argument against Curry I do freaking hate is when people say he canā€™t be one of the best ever because of his defense, when Magic Johnson wasnā€™t known as a great defender either and people (including myself) constantly put him on their Top 5

He wasn't using Magic's retirement as a cop out or even as compliment to him. He was just putting into perspective how early his retirement was. Also when he mentioned the # of accolades you said "man if this is the argument" contradicts what you said earlier about "we just need to look on paper what you did in the time you played" Magic did more in less time

Since when is it 'unfair' to bring up the first few seasons of a player? They were scared of Curry's legs so much (2011-2012), they tried to trade him for Chris Paul. They also tried to trade Curry instead of Monta Ellis to milwaukee for bogut which the bucks declined. Magic was never going to be traded from the lakers. Lets keep this subject as Curry being the greatest shooter of all time and an overall revolutionist to the modern NBA basketball and Magic being the best point guard of all time.

Magic didnā€™t have a 73 win team and needed injuries to Kyrie and Kevin love and recruit KD to win in his prime
  • The thing with magic is that in the finals and in the playoffs, his stats get better. He is completely unstoppable. He's more efficient from the field, better rebounder better passer, not the shooter, but magic is underrated as a shooter. Curry, it took him a while to outperform his regular season performances. Magic from day one always outplayed his regular season performance. I'm top of the fact that he has more accomplishments. He's a positive in every sense of the way lol
  • the people who argue steph wasn't good till his 4th/5th season, will willfully ignore the part where he's a rookie in 1, 2 and 3 he was pretty much injured and then in 4 when he was fully healthy he was an all star i think. So basically 1 year rookie, injured for 1 and worked through some other injury (that didn't keep him off completely but still) and came back the next season and was an all star
  • @Thehughesgaming
Iā€™d say Magic just because of how much I rate him tbh, I think heā€™s solidly like 4th all time, whereas I donā€™t think I can put Curry over the players I have Magic over already
  • @flameofthegame
At minute 4 and already we can use the same argument with Curry what if he wins 5 straight cuz if they dont get injured that's a real possibility compared to assuming Magic might've finished with 7-8 rings .

Magic was a monster the moment he walked into the league, went to the finals and dropped 40 and 15 boards in a crucial game as a ROOKIE (and played center that game)ā€¦ as good as Steph is now it took him several seasons to become a true superstar, while Magic was already that the moment he came into the league. Still has more chips, more MVPā€™s, more finals MVPā€™s.. Magic is a better athlete, better rebounder, best playmaker ever, and to this day still probably the best transition weapon ever, and U couldnā€™t treat him like a Ben Simmons, Magic had a legit post game, and u canā€™t foul him as he shoots over 90% from the free throw lineā€¦ I love Stephā€™s game but Johnny Arnett was cooking with this video
  • @aflowingbrook2919
okay, but what would MAGIC JOHNSON have to do for people to rank him above steph? like how many more accolades would he have to have for him to be the goat. how can people make the argument for steph but not for magic.
  • @nickgamble280
Magic is top three for me, so I guess a lot of ppl who have steph over him or close to him don't have magic that high in the first place.
  • @willbishop5754
The term ā€œobtained HIVā€ is wild, makes it sound like he got it from a side quest (2:13)
  • @jasperbrooks4938
It's so dumb to me when people act like Steph is a merchant of the 3pt era... He literally ushered in the 3pt era. Without Steph we wouldn't have this whole revolution.
  • @shubanobi2206
Also man I get Magic stopped playing basketball for reasons out of his control (kinda) but im not finna just give him a freebie on all the years he might have played. Thatā€™s unfair to those who maintained endurance and longevity (again, not that it was Magic Johnsons fault). Iā€™m not going to take early retirement into account. He played that many years, thatā€™s his resume.
  • @sadeugas8037
We shouldnā€™t create a box that defines what a PG is especially in a positionless generation of basketball. Thatā€™s what alot of old heads hold against Curry in favor of Magic because he is a passing PG instead of a scoring PG. if we defined the Centre position as rebounding, rim protection and a lob threat then Jokic is a terrible Centre. If you think Magic is better objectively because of his accomplishments and abilities thats fine but what makes Magic great shouldnā€™t define what a great PG is.
