Monogatari is filled with liars. Characters deceive each other--characters deceive themselves. But arguably, nobody more so than Sengoku Nadeko. Like a doll, Nadeko hides behind this cute image, retracting inward both to avoid the ugliness of others as well as her own shadows inside. However, this mask is not her greatest deception. Nadeko's biggest lie is the lie she tells herself that she deserves to stay hidden.

Nadeko characters arc doesn't get nearly enough love as it should. Great job pointing it out.

Kaiki steals the show everytime he comes on screen

Can we take a sec to appreciate the masterful work of Shaft, with incredible use of visual metaphor and cinematography. Especially for a series based off a NOVEL.

I'm sad everytime people dismiss Nadeko's character as simply villainous or callous of others. At the end of the day she's still very much just a kid, trying to find herself in the most extreme monogatari way possible.

Everyone hates her because of how she is. They hate her self-deceiving, they hate her passive attitude. Problem is, she also hates herself. The irony of knowing your weaknesses but being too weak to overcome them is what makes her such a relatable character. "Yes, i know I'm a coward. But I can't force myself to stop being a coward because i am too coward... to stop being a coward."
  • This is why I don't really understand why everyone hates Nadeko sm and love Hanekawa when in reality they are so much alike.

I hated Nadeko as a character so much, but now that I've watched this video I think the reason of why I hated her was because of how much I relate to her.... to the way she sees her self. Of course I'm not talking about being a cute doll... but the way she hated herself to the point where she abandoned the only thing that was keeping her together... aka her creative outlet, I can relate to this so much it's actually painful. Thank you so much for creating this video... I don't know if anything in my life is going to change because of it, but if a change actually happens... you defiantly deserve credit for it.
  • DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG I'VE WAITED FOR A VIDEO ON OTORI/KOI? Thank you so much for your hard work, this is amazing.

There's never enough analysis on Nadeko. Thanks for doing this! Favourite character in the series by far for me, and certainly the most relatable.

Can't wait for more Monogatari vids from you; hope you do one on Ougi in the future!

Damn. This is why I love monogatari, why I have all the novels on my shelf. And this video eloquently transposes that. Nadeko was a character that took me a while to understand, which is funny because she is quite similar to me. I'm someone that wants to be a comic artist, I want to pursue that passion. Yet at my birthday party when my mother gifted me some manga drawing books I waited until we were in private to truly thank her, to thank her for paying attention to what I had been talking about. Because I didn't want my family knowing about it and having expectations of me, expectations I would be afraid of letting down. I find myself beating myself up if I don't work at my comic because I know it is what I am passionate about. I know that if I just say I'm gonna do something it is never going to happen, I have to actually put in that work and effort to see my dreams come to fruition, so I don't tell anyone except my closest friends about the things I work on. I think that being a creative is one of the hardest things because you have to acknowledge your shortcomings and actively work to better yourself, you can't just go through the motions. And sadly most of us creatives also have the curse of never being able to see the quality of our own work, no matter how good you get it is never good enough, and even someone that can't draw etc complimenting it doesn't help. Creating things is truly a cursed endeavor in which you lay your soul bare for the world to see, and sadly that is what makes it so beautiful. You put a portion of yourself in everything you make.

I never understood why everyone antagonized her so much. I always found her very relatable and I'd get sad seeing such a relatable character being so hated on. Nobody talked about how Shinobu and Araragi's younger sister which was supposed to be her best friend bulied her unjustifyingly because they "can't stand her".
  • Please make more Monogatari vids, this series has so much more depth (especially characters) than just interesting dialogues or fan-service (although we all appreciate lol), love analysis vids like these xD!!!
  • @kirbymancer
Nadeko will always be my favorite character from monogatari like all of them are amazing and perfectly written but I feel like nadeko is the most real feeling of all of them like her personality is something that I’d actually believe would be a common occurrence in real life
  • @lynn4840
Hanekawa is still best girl, but Sengoku is an extremely close second for me. I adore her, and it's kind of a bummer she's so hated because if more people understood or were willing to understand the point of her story (which you nailed 100% in this video btw), a lot of them would probably like her more.

I finally understand why this arc stuck out to me so much, I relate to it deeply, yet until recently I wouldn't have understood than. Hiding behind a mask, keeping parts of myself hidden, never feeling like I could show those parts of me and of who I want to be to anyone. It's like I'm stuck trying to be someone I'm not, because I don't want feel worse then I do right now.

I love rewatching these videos, as they’re so well executed and feel like actual academic essays put to visuals :)

Nadeko is by far my favorite character in the whole series and overall I think is along Kaiki and Shinobu one of the best written characters in the series, no, she BECAME one of the most well written characters in the series. Idk at which stance did Nisio plan to explore even more Nadeko as a character but he managed to make a continuity of how much the story reveals the deepness of her character. From just a little tease of oddness in Nadeko Snake, a weird interaction in Tsubasa Cat, Nadeko "out of character" in Nisemonogatari, her entire character being expanded and antagonized in Nadeko Medusa, an unexpected exploration of her past and true feelings in Hitagi End and finally a welcomed redemption in Nadeko Draw. I really hope they adapt the off season volumes soon (I really hope we get the official translation of Nademonogatari even sooner, they already translated Zoku Owarimonogatari)

As someone with very close real similarity to Nadako story, still figuring things through I thank you for this video.
