🇸🇾 I always thought the Middle East was just rock and sand and full of fanatical nutters. I mean that's all the media ever show us isn't it. And so to cast off my ignorance and prejudice I travelled down to the country with probably the worst reputation of all, Syria. I was joined by Wales's most famous culinary expert @SimonWilson12 ( check out his channel for his videos from the trip ) and our new Syrian mate Rami for a journey that both educated and surprised us. Maybe it will surprise and educate you a little bit too and next time you watch some depressing news report from the country you will be able to better draw your own conclusions. Watch this ( the longest video I have ever made ) and find out for yourselves. Shukran habibis.

🇸🇾 I used an independent tour agency to travel to Syria. www.marrota.com
I highly recommend them if you are considering visiting. The manager can be contacted here: ayoub@marrota

  • This is so surreal. I never thought it would be possible to see you vlogging on the streets I pass through on the daily. I hope you had a great time in Syria and enjoyed learning more about our country, it would've been unreal had I stumbled across you by chance, but I'm glad I stumbled across your wonderful content a couple years ago nonetheless. -probably your biggest fan in Syria!
  • As a Syrian that has been outside Syria for almost 7 years now, this video was an emotional Rollercoaster. My grandfather owns a bookshop in old Damascus since the 1940s, the one that you were standing in front of it as Simon met his fan 10:55 , you can even see my name on it since me and my grandfather have the same name 😁.. and for a moment I remembered when I was a kid, the amount of tourists that came every day to get guides and maps. It's very sad that no tourist would consider Syria for a vacation anymore. Great video Benjamin, thanks a lot for showing the real beauty of this country. It was very heartwarming and for 50 minutes it felt like being back home
  • My mother and father were medics in the Bulgarian Embassy in Syria in the 70''s and early 80's. Both of them keep amazing memories of Damascus and the kind people there. They keep hundreds of photos and I can also say that the whole place was safe, clean, welcoming and beautiful by looking the photos. Watching the news when the war started and watching the destruction literally was like an arrow in the heart for both my parents.
  • Bald usually disappears for a while at the end of a trip to somewhere dangerous, everyone thinks he’s dead, and he just pops up at the most random of places. It’s a great cycle.
  • This man is literally doing what governments can’t. And that’s bridging cultures together and breaking stereotypes. It’s important for channels like ourselves to bring awareness and bridge these gaps. Amazing work as always.
  • I learn more about foreign countries and cultures from a bald guy with a camera on youtube than I have ever done from countless hours of "news" or years of schooling. If ever I needed more of a reason to stop watching regular TV - well this is it. Amazing content as always B&B.
  • I was born in Syria Damascus this warms my heart so much it made me cry watching you walk through roads i grew up in and to see my people still be the same friendliest loveliest kind hearted people makes me so happy 🥺🥺I can’t wait to go back to my home 😭😭💔
  • The lady at the Baron hotel is Robina, she used to be my teacher at school. She is an amazing woman. She took good care of the hotel. I believe she owns a part of the hotel 🙏. Its really good to see her in your video. Last time I saw her was in 2010!
  • @philj8205
Man this video nearly brought me to tears. You can see their eyes light up when they realize a tourist is enjoying their country again. These people have such good hearts.
  • @MEMO2011O
As someone who speaks both English and arabic it was hilarious when the arabic guy was asking him in arabic “mn wheen” which means where are you from and my guy thought his name was manuell 😂😂😂😂😂
  • This channel is doing really important work. Documenting the warmth and humanity in parts of the world that so many of us only see through the distorted and sensationalist lens of the media. Thanks for doing what you do.
  • I'm one of Bald & Bankrupt's biggest fans and I'm Syrian. I always wait for his videos and this time I was made with one of the best surprises. Thank you for visiting my country ❤️🇸🇾
  • @chops8404
Wow…. When that gentleman started speaking Aramaic.. That was special. Such nice people in Syria. I wish everyone across the world would just get along and not war with each other.. ✌🏻❤️
  • I was in Syria for a whole year. I fell in love with the country and especially the people. They made me feel like home. Absolutely loved the food.
  • I visited Syria 24 times before the war, as I took a few tour groups from Denmark to Damascus. I also solo cycled through Syria once. It might sound strange to many people, but Syria is actually the country where I felt the safest during all my travels. And I have been to +80 countries. Hopefully I will be back again soon.
  • @amir222
It is one of the most descent episodes I have ever watched from”bald and bankrupt” it’s amazing how the people in Syria are happy and hospitable despite what they gone through for 11 years , greetings from Haifa.
  • The woman giving you the tour at the Allepo Hotel seems such a genuine person trying to tell a beautiful story of how we are all connected and should get along and move on with life. How great would it be if indeed we could do that.
  • Hands down, this guy changed my perspective on life. I was once a believer that you shouldn't visit those places that are defined by the media only as bad, when in reality, they have lots of beautiful things to offer. Thanks to this guy, I have visited Cambodia and Vietnam to name a few, countries that I probably otherwise wouldn't have visited. I love to see it.
