My name is Oliver, 86 years old. I have an interesting story about the Texas Chocolate Sheet cake.Years ago, I believe it was in the 60's, My Mother and Father-in law lived in the Dominican Republic. A Dominican lady made them a chocolate cake. It was delicious. My mother-in-law asked for the recipe. The lady refused, said it was a secret family recipe handed down. She finally relented and gave it to my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law gave it to my wife. My wife gave it to whomever wanted it. No longer a secret. In the 1980 I was working in Texas. My wife gave the "Secret Recipe to a very nice German lady there. Figured that's how it got introduced to Texas. To make a long story short. The Secret recipe is the same as the one you posted. It is by far my favorite chocolate cake. Love your show. I watch every episode.
  • Yes my girlfriend from n central farm country made a packed lunch while we were driving into a Billy Graham crusade in Chicago 1971. I was pregnant with morning sickness. She made this. I never had a problem. Now I'm going to make this for my birthday this weekend no. 78!!!!!

Oh my goodness. I literally just texted my cousin to see if she had my Aunts recipe for Texas sheet cake. She’s been gone for 4 years and I miss her and the cake. Thank you for always sharing the most wonderful recipes. I’m the matriarch of our family now and I cook for my son and his family every Wednesday. (My daughter and identical granddaughters are amazing cooks) I love the two of you, you are so beautiful inside and out. I am going to make this also for bible study too! Have a blessed and amazing day. I cannot wait until your next video.

I have been making this cake since the late 1960's. I received it shortly after my marriage. A real crowd pleaser. I also made a pineapple sheet cake.
  • When ever I watch you I think of my grandmother. She would always say that a good cook never waists anything. You always scrap out your bowls clean.

I chuckle every time Melissa’s hand discretely secures the stand mixer❣❣❣

I made this all time for my dad. Haven't made sense he passed in 1987. But I think will have to do so.❤❤
  • Thank you for giving credit where credit is due to Ladybird. Being a Texas gal myself, this is one of the first cakes my mother taught me to make, I was 8, I am 65 now. The only difference is that we always add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the cake mix. It makes a big difference. Everyone always asks, "What's the difference in your chocolate cake?" It is such a subtle taste that they can not distinguish what it is. Hope you try it.

1964. The cake was originally called Gertrude Armstrong’s Chocolate Cake. Ms. Armstrong was a Texas native I believe. I’ve had the recipe since 1964, yes, that long ago. I cut it out of a newspaper, and Lady Bird was not part of the nomenclature at the time, LBJ had just been made President and she was not that well known at the time let alone have any influence. Her influence for the cake came along later after it had been published and already was a favorite. I made it immediately and to this day it is everybody’s favorite, I make it often. When I get the chocolate crazies this is my go-to for my chocolate fix. I couldn’t do without it. I was 23 years old when I first got it and now I’m 83. Wow, a lifetime of the best chocolate cake ever. I’ve talked myself into it…..this chocolate cake is on my horizon for today, can’t wait any longer. I love your all’s show, I watch every one of them and have made MANY of your recipes, both sweet and savory. Keep them coming!

It’s seems like every church potluck has a Texas sheet cake show up! Thanks for showing us how to make it.

My sister gave me this recipe back in the 80s, when she moved to Texas. It is called Chocolate Flat Cake. The icing does not use, buttermilk, but evaporated milk instead. And, after putting the frosting on the cake, you put it back in the oven for five minutes to glaze. It makes it wonderful!

I can not tell you, how much I enjoy each and everyone of your videos. You have a way about you that makes you feel like your viewers are in your kitchen while you are baking or cooking. I also love how your wife is forever reminding you of stuff. I am the same with my husband. FYI, I freeze my buttermilk in 1/2 cups and put that into a sandwich zip bag, making sure it is really zipped and than lay the bags flat and stack them. I then put them into the freezer until I need them. Depending on how much buttermilk is called for in the recipe I am making I will take one or two bags out of the freezer and put those into the refrigerator overnight to thaw and then in the morning I take the bags out and let the buttermilk come to room temp along with all of the other ingredients. I have been doing this for years. The buttermilk might separate some, but you can shake it, I usually leave it alone and add it to the recipe as is. Just so you know, I am not a new cook or baker, I started doing those things when I was 10, I am now 73. Again, thank you both for this channel. suzie

So nice you talked about your friends Becky and Bill and giving her credit for the recipe.❤️. My mother in law made this cake and gave us the recipe, her sister lived in Texas and she passed it on, it was ALWAYS a family fav! I lost the recipe, my mother in law has been gone many years, but she called it a Texas Dolly Cake😁! Thanks for the recipe, it’s soooo good!
  • @lindasmith7435
I’ve been making this cake for 45 years, it’s still one of our favorite cakes. I use the same recipe.
  • @lindahays8444
I'm a chocoholic. So this was right in my wheel house. Thank you for sharing.
  • Oh Good Lord! I don’t even want to watch this video!! Your desserts are all so wonderful and tempting but there is only 2 of us to eat them! Your big main dishes and casseroles are wonderful because we eat on them for a few nights or freeze them if you said we can. I’ve told all my friends about your channel but with caution because everything is so good! Thank you and may God continue to bless you and Melissa!
  • @karopecktate
