Sandton, a suburb of Johannesburg, is known as "Africa's Richest Square Mile." It's also located directly next to the extremely poor township of Alexandra, where Nelson Mandela had resided. As a result, Johannesburg is widely considered as the most unequal city in the world.

The reason for this situation can be explained easily. The ANC has been running the country for almost 30 years, yet in that time they've taken various state owned enterprises and run them into the ground, mostly through corrupt processes where they end up lining their own pockets. As much as the people continue to vote for them, they don't care about the people. All they need from the "uneducated" masses is to keep them in power. Everything from public education to public health care is a mess, and it just deteriorated over the years. Even the projects to build low cost housing was used as a mechanism by public officials to steal money. If the ANC weren't so corrupt, there would be more than enough tax revenue left to build apartment buildings, parks and schools in Alex. Unfortunately, the voter base is not willing to allow an alternative political party to take a shot at resolving some of these issues. You cannot do the same thing and expect different results.
  • In SouthAfrica "Everyboy is fixing the blame, nobody is fixing the problem"
  • The problem in South Africa is not Sandton. Inequality is wrong but the grand corruption over the last 30 years is just incomprehensible. The suffering that it has caused is unimaginable.

So it’s companies responsibility to uplift Alex? How much tax is the Sandton business sector paying every year? How much of that tax is wasted by the ANC🤷🏼‍♂️

In South Africa there are rich white people, rich black people, rich Indian people etc. And then there are the poor even homeless white people, black people and also other races or ethnicities. The main problem in South Africa is just what some of these people mentioned in this video, the anc government is not competent to run this country and are so extremely corrupt that even they have turned from poor freedom fighters in the past to stinking rich politicians who laughs at the suffering and calamity of the citizens whom they have been deceiving for decades with empty promises which never sees the light of day.

Alexandra isn't poor. It's underdeveloped. Alot of money moves in and around Alex.

The situation of Alex is a result of government's inability to plan and build affordable housing. People that live in Alex go to work each day and come back to Alex coz over the last 30 years, government did not build enough affordable housing in Johannesburg. You cannot plan for the city to have street cleaners, construction workers and domestic, workers, and not plan where they can afford accommodation with their average salary. And the slums are growing in Johannesburg due to foreigners mostly from Zimbabwe and Mozambique who come into the country without any means to live.

Everyone talking about politicians or political parties saving us is living in a dream world
  • That mkhulu speaking towards the end . Wearing a green shirt is speaking facts. As much as can blame the government, we as the youth need to take responsibility of our wrong doings
  • I know many people who live in Alex but come from better paces. They are there for work purposes and the rent is much cheaper. Many are building big houses in 'n their rural areas. The story of Alex and other similar places can be deceiving if no thorough research is done.
  • @zusibone
Alexander is also a symptom of people's choice. Alex cannot be fixed. It's impossible. New entrants from SADC come live here.
  • Sandton cannot be the most unequal city in the world. Go to India or Brazil and you will find it there as well.

One thing I hate about about our government is that once they build something it ends there no maintenance whatsoever occurs. Looking at many township schools, halls, and sport fields they still look the same way as they were before 1994 no change has been made to these infrastructures since then. This is an ongoing thing check the R15 million field in the eastern cape grass is above 1 meter in height and there is no running water in the change rooms do you think that this field will still be used in the next 5 years? No, lack of infrastructure maintenance is what is leading to a lot of facilities to be like this. We need to stop blaming our people about what is happening to these infrastructures in townships and in rural areas but start holding our leaders accountable.

Namibia has the exact same issue. U have amazing houses 1 minutes drive away from shacks. As someone that has the privilege to live in comfort it's quite sad when you realize it's a system beyond us
  • I can’t believe that Old Taima complained about prisons not being built 😢😢

South Africa will never, ever recover under ANC rule
