Taking a break from bad video games, the Nerd spends his time recalling his fondest memories of reading the Nintendo Power magazine. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 33.

Before the Internet, there was only one source for Nintendo gaming news and pro tips- the pages of Nintendo Power magazine. Starting in 1988, the magazine kept gamers informed on the hottest scoops in Nintendo culture in its hundreds of monthly issues. Though generally reliable, it was published by Nintendo itself and sometimes served as a promotional organ in the guise of journalism.

All these years later, the Nerd unseals his vintage NP collection and looks back at the influential publication through the lens of hindsight.

  • They responded to those letters absolutely savagely back then. For example, in once issue, somebody complains about them printing letters that don't directly relate to video games, and their response is "but then we wouldn't have printed yours".
  • As a kid I'd watch these videos when my mom was cooking so she wouldn't hear the swear words. James didn't realize that by revisiting his childhood memories, he was creating mine.

This video emanates the same energy as waking up really early in the morning, watching cartoons and eating pancakes. Except now that I’m a full grown adult and I’m awake early eating canned soup.

10:12 I find this ironic since all of the AVGN episode titles are not numbered anymore. EDIT: He even complained that you have to look inside the Nintendo Power to see the number. The episode number is in the description, so even that is ironic.

Now that Nintendo Power is on the Internet Archive, it'll never die.

    Literally the comfiest AVGN video.
  • I must admit, I sent a Mega Man boss design in. Sorry everyone. Luckily "Thought-Man" will never see the light of day...

“You know it’s badass when you’re flying in a Jeep through space going apeshit with Nintendo controllers.” One of the best

"Nothing brings back memories like looking through an issue of Nintendo Power." Let me correct your statement. It should be: Nothing brings back memories like watching an old episode of AVGN.

It amazes me that this video came out when I was 8… I'm almost 21. These videos never really age. I've replayed them all probably over a million times and they still feel strangely new.
  • @saltystick_99
came back after the intro part was reenacted in the latest episode
  • @Lupinthe3rd.
Interesting fact Steve Wozniak (co-founder of apple) had the highest tetris scores recorded in the magazine he got so good he was banned from submitting his score to the magazine to get around it he mailed from another zip code and submitted it to the magazine as Evets Kainzow his name backwards.
