During tonic immobility, the 'dead' animals are alert and waiting for their opportunity to escape. Hemachatus haemachatus (Rinkhals) are very ready to, and very convincing at 'playing dead'. Step back a couple of metres and wait, and animals playing dead will likely flip over and slip off.
