When we think of popular modern day songs, the bass line might not be the first thing that pops into our minds. Ryan and I listen to "Locked Out of Heaven," "Levitating," and "Canned Heat" with our guest ‪@CharlesBerthoud‬ to break down the bass lines in each of these songs and what makes them surprisingly great.

Special thanks to Charles for joining us! Check out his channel and Instagram here:

We need a separate show where Ryan and jack can argue about theory for half an hour.
  • It feels weird considering a Jamiroquai bassline "surprisingly" good, I always thought their bass was considered some of the best in the biz.

Love the video, love you guys, but there's nothing surprising about a Jamiroquai bass line being absolute fire 😆
  • @mv11000
Charles is such a great player and also very humble, just love the guy

Toby Smith, original Jamiroquai Keys wizard, - who was in the band for the first 5 albums - played the synth bass líne on "Canned Heat" on a Moog (he was famous for using Moogs in studio and live: Moog Source mostly live during the first years) The bass líne was originally written by founding member, the one and only, funky bass pIayer Stuart Zender (who was in the band for the first 3 albums co-writting many of the songd and was already recording the 4th almost completely)... but It was said after Stuart Zender left the band during the recording of that 4th álbum which was called "Symphonized" later changed to "Synkronized", they decided to redo the tracks to avoid legal issues... So, Toby played the Synth in place of the electric bass. The original bass line was very similar and the original version was rreally special as told by the very same Stuart... And it must be true: Jamiroquai was on FIRE in that era with that line up. That incomplete album Is the most asked rare recording by the fans ;)

“Minor 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other” INCREDIBLE 👏👏
  • @szrnkabela
To me not surprising at all - but very much worthy to analyze them! Charles is in perfect company with you! Please record a lot with him on any instrument!

Jamiroquai was my gateway into music many years ago, with the “Emergency on Planet Earth” album. And a reason why I praise bass and drum playing so much. Thanks for another Dead Wax episode, guys!
  • @maxjpind
You guys need to do a whole episode on Jamiroquai bass lines. “Runaway” and “Space Cowboy” get my votes 😁
  • Ryan was totally right. It's in the key of F major, and just starts on minor sixth chord. However Keys can feel different depending where you start. And honestly they are just relative major and minor so its not a big deal. From a guitarist Point of You, it's relatively based on the home chord which feels like F major.

The bass on Canned Heat was played on a mini moog by the bands Keyboard Player Toby Smith
  • I'm a self taught life long cover band bassist and a lot of things you talk about is over my head. But what does translate to me is the passion you all have for music. I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them. Thanks!
  • Would love more collab with Charles! Maybe a Scary Pockets session?

10:03 Great songs where the chords never change - Something in the Way - Nirvana Molly's Lips - The Vaselines & Nirvana Aretha Franklin - Chain of Fools The Temptations - Papa Was a Rolling Stone The Beatles - Within You Without You Most Blues Songs Sean Hayes - Angel (this entire song doesn't even use a chord, just muted strings with a slight harmonic on a single F# note) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Running Through the Jungle Fleetwood Mac - Dreams America - Horse With No Name Chuck Berry - You Never Can Tell There are actually a surprising number of these out there. Now I need to dig more and find others cause I'm just downright curious at this point.

Discovered this channel a week ago. I have now watched nearly 50 of your videos. First time watching a brand new video as a full-blown fan and I'm hyped about it.

Sending hugs and love to you all!!

Fun video! The analysis, breakdown, disagreement and seeking the facts of the music is a big part of the experience and the enjoyment. Charles is YouTube bass royalty.

Jamiroquai’ bassist Stuart Zender is one of my favourite bassist ever : Runaway, emergency on planet earth… pls all bass players check out the basslines ! I just didn’t expect Jamiroquai’s basslines would be considered SUPRISINGLY good
