➡️ If you play bass guitar, and have a broadband internet connection with access to YouTube - you've surely seen the sheer brilliance of ‪@CharlesBerthoud‬ by now. If not, I hope you have a spare change of pants nearby. Charles has taken solo bass playing to new heights over the last few years with his sensational videos covering everything from his arrangements of classic songs to his own original music. In this video, I have an absolute blast reacting to, and analyzing, his renditions of "Master Of Puppets" and "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica - both played in completely different styles on a multitude of different basses. I break down the techniques he uses for both including slap and pop, double-thump, two-handed tapping - and then dissect his beautiful arrangement for "Nothing Else Matters" with a masterful use of bass harmonics and chordal tapping. Charles is inspiring the next generation of bass players, and I have an insane amount of respect for it!

  • Thanks for the kind words!! Really enjoyed your analysis, you’re 100% right about tapping - you’ve got to have the raw sound be nice and clean otherwise effects really won’t help much. And to clarify how many fingers I use when tapping - those fast flurries I usually don’t get the pinkies involved but more melodic, slower stuff the pinkies can help a lot

Charles is the kind of bassist that inspires me to get better. At kazoo.
  • Charles is the most skilled and creative player out there Just amazing how he does it
  • @f.b.jeffers0n
Dude... CB is one of this centuries GOATS on bass, imo... I've been following him for years, and his originals are something else you'd enjoy, if you don't already
  • Charles is one of the people who I watch and then wonder why I'm even bothering trying to learn 😆
  • @ToIsleOfView
I agree. Berthoud is a prodigy. His original music is setting new highs in music creativity. I want him performing his music live for millions of listeners.
  • @dougsrosen
Charles could literally just be a midi synth in a human body... No one knows for sure.
  • Two things always impress me about Charles' videos. I could spend 100 years practicing and I might be able to play one of his tracks, but it won't be as crystal clear and Charles will have another epic arrangement out every week in-between
  • @cgsaint
This guy is the best bass player on the internet right now
  • I’m a non-musician, so take my opinion with a grain of salt on this, but what blows me away when I hear a bassist or guitarist on Charles’ level is the fluidity and seeming effortlessness, no matter how complex the playing is. With highly skilled but lesser bassists and guitarists, I find myself straining a little while listening, unwittingly willing the player to make it through. With a player like Charles, I am filled with confidence and just sit back and enjoy the pure poetry as it emanates from his instrument.
  • Completely agree that his arrangement is extremely high level and the most valuable skill. He write his own covers showing he is a great songwriter. Anyone can learn to play a cover, few can write excellent music taking full advantage of the given instruments.
  • @Seebeejeebees
Charles, in my opinion, is the greatest bass player alive. I know plenty will disagree, but I'm just unable to find anyone who can match his clean style and his insane compositions. Watching him grow on YT has been an incredible journey.
  • Cliff's use of syncopated triplets makes a lot of early Metallica basslines very difficult to play perfectly. The fact is, in some places, it sounds like Charles is doubling up the triplets! Dude is a beast!
  • Charles has put in the hours on top of amazing musicality. Glad to hear you comment. A bass teacher would really know how gifted he is. Thank you.
  • @butterfer0808
You can argue that guys like Victor Wooten have more mastery over the musicality of the instrument, but Charles is the greatest bass player to ever live in terms of raw, technical ability.
  • @chrisschmedel
Not only do the arrangements just baffle me, but the amount of videos with insane arrangements and techniques is what puts it over the top to me. Charles puts out around 5 videos/month, so at most with editing/uploading and having a life with his fiancée/wife, he probably dedicates 3-4 days on an arrangement like this if he doesn't work on videos at the same time.
  • Charles has mentioned a few times he is heavily inspired by Cliff.
