Unlike the movie world, where a second film usually fails to recapture the magic of a much-loved first, sequels in gaming are often better than their initial outing. Then there are the games that, for one reason or another, failed to stick the landing so spectacularly that not only did they sink as an individual title, they sunk their entire franchise in the process. Games that shook up the formula in the wrong way, failed to evolve with the times, or were just plain rubbish. We’ve looked at few already, but, unfortunately, there are plenty more. Here are 10 More Games that Killed their Franchise.

  • Capcom had to hire a literal necromancer for resident evil after RE6 came out. (I mean it worked…)

Thief 4 hurts. Thief 1-2 were some of the best games around at time of release. Thief 4 however… was not.
  • Deus EX Mankind Divided is one of the best games I have ever played. The only problem is that it was short.

Sorry, have you played CnC3? It didn't remotely start the downfall of the series, if anything the community was surprised how good of a job the devs did keeping the Tiberian story going and even using some ideas from the Westwood Tiberian Twilight. CnC4 was a quite sudden fall from grace.

The Castlevania one hurt me deeply... We only get game collabs nowadays (looking at you Dead By Daylight and Dead Cells...)

Dead Space 3 was awesome. It was really fun and John Carver was a great addition to the cast.

Its interesting to see, that which tanked Banjo, uplifted Zelda. :]

Terry Crews is a national treasure

Might and Magic 9 is one I can think of. While we got a tenth entry eventually after many years of silence, it had hardly anything to do with the older games. And speaking of Might and Magic, the spinoff Heroes of Might and Magic 7 looks like it killed the franchise as well. Dawn of War 3 is another, killed by many of the same reasons as CnC4. Grandia 3, Ninja Gaiden 3 and Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter were some others that were seriously screwed over and was the death blow to their respective series.

I swear I'll never not be salty over Nuts N Bolts. 🤦🏼
  • Admiddetly the story of mankind divided was bit lacking and ended on a cliffhanger, nevertheless i always considered it pretty great game. It has solid gameplay with many different playstyles to choose from and i really liked the level design.
  • I never really played the first two Banjo and Kazooie games, so maybe that's why I loved Nuts and Boltz and had so much fun with it. And, I think how much people love the build mechanic in Tears of the Kingdom shows that the game was ahead of it's time.
  • Pikmin 4 totally killed the franchise. I don't know what Miyamoto was thinking losing the M rated alien dating hybrid breeding program simulator gameplay from the first 3 Pikmin games and turning it into some weird Wonderful 101 knockoff for kids. Pikmin used to be all about sexual congress between consenting Pikmins and full frontal nudity with weird aliens and it was the best Nintendo franchise until Miyamoto got cold feet or his boss (Mario) forced him to turn it into a kids game where you eat flowers or kiss angels or hold hands in a circle of rainbows and laser unicorns and sing about how we are all gods children while paying $8 a minute on Psychic Friends Network 1-900 numbers because you have no friends and Pikmin isn't an M rated dating simulator any more and that cookie mobster in the trash can ate apes bosst equals six. Wait, then that happened. Ka-five. I repeat: ka-five.

Surprised Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night wasn't mentioned for Castlevania.
  • I really enjoyed Crackdown 3. Great little weekend blast through for the £3 a physical copy goes for these days.
  • The James Bond Franchise has been effectively dead since the PS3, when 007 Legends killed it. Still unsure how this isn't number one with a bullet.
