Not all dogs are small, fluffy and adorable. Some are huge beasts! And while some are huge but nice, like Clifford the Big Red Dog. Some are big, but fearsome. Some could even rival a wolf in a brawl. Yes, really. These are dog breeds that can defeat wolves!

The most intimidating dog I've ever seen was a Chijujia who lived in my neighborhood. No one owned him. He just ran around going here and there. He was missing an eye and had scars all over from being in fights. He had a big lump on the top of his head that might have been a tumor. We all called him the Colonel. One night really late, I heard garbage cans rolling around and a bunch of racket in my neighbor's yard and yipping. The Colonel beat the shit out of both of his labs and he had to rush them to the vet. He used to squat in the middle of the road and dare someone to run him over. Didn't give a fuck. I haven't seen him for a year or so. I assume he's dead. But what a badass.

American pitbull terrier should be the top 5 dog breeds on this list, there is no other canine breed that even comes close.

There isn’t a dog on this planet that can kill a full grown Timber 👊🏾

Akitas deserve an honorable mention at least.

Narrator: “Number 15: There are possibly no dog breeds in the world more capable of defeating a wolf than the Anatolian Shepherd dog.” >proceeds to list 14 dog breeds MORE capable of defeating a wolf than an Anatolian Shepherd dog.
  • Left out the Labradoodle. They'd just make the wolf play with them until the wolf dropped from exhaustion.
  • These guys have obviously never seen the wolves in northern Canada. They're enormous and much larger than other wolves. Ask Joe Rogan?
  • Rhodesian ridgeback protected tribes in Africa from threat of lions and other predators
  • This video is pretty comical. Against some of the smaller European wolves, these dogs stand a fighting chance, but not the American Timberwolf. A large Timberwolf is much bigger and stronger than most people realize. It has a bite force of over 1,200 PSI. A pit bull has a bite force of about 250 PSI. The other thing to keep is n mind is that a domesticated dog is reacting on instinct, not experience. A wild wolf hunts and kills things on a daily basis. Your pet dog simply has no chance of winning this fight. I’ve seen a large Timberwolf take down an 800 pound animal in Yellowstone National Park. It was unbelievable to see. It’s unlikely that any pet dog would last very long in this fight.
  • how did you miss the Rhodesian Ridgeback? they were used to hunt lions.

As many people have commented already, wolves are wild animals. They live to survive and that means they are born with a survival instinct. If one of these dogs on this list was in protective mode, they will do some damage one on one; however, wolves are not solitary creatures and chances are, if there is one wolf, there are others close by.

Thank you for pointing out that wolf-dog hybrids can be unreliable. Each has its own, unique temperament; some are fine, others dangerous. Too many people get wolf-dogs solely for the ego factor and end up in a bad situation. Willi B. in Canada.

If a particular dog – as far as you're aware – hasn't actually fought a wolf, it isn't fact that it would/could beat one. In fact, wolves vary in size as well and some are as massive as some of the dogs shown in your video, which changes the equation significantly.
