Lyrics

When my love said to me
Meet me down by the gallow tree
For it's sad news I bring
About this old town and all that it's offering
Some say troubles abound
Some day soon they're gonna pull the old town down
One day we'll return here,
When the Belfast child sings again

(Sinead O'Connor)
I dreamed last night
That my own love came in
He came in so sweetly
His feet made no din
He crept up beside me
And this he did say:
It will not be long, love,
'Til our wedding day

Some come back Billy, won't you come on home
Come back Mary, you've been away so long
The streets are empty, and your mother's gone
The girls are crying, it's been oh so long
And your father's calling, come on home
Come on home, come on home

Come back people, you've been gone a while
And the war is raging, in the emerald isle
That's flesh and blood man, that's flesh and blood
All the girls are crying but all's not lost
The streets are empty, the streets are cold
Won't you come on home, won't you come on home

The streets are empty
Life goes on, Life goes on

One day we'll return here
When the Belfast child sings again
When the Belfast child sings again

It’s a very sad song, but legendary. Gosh… what a band.!!!! The 80s, wouldn’t be the 80s without The Simple Minds.
  • I cannot believe how much modern music has fallen down, incredibly down. Please, compare this song (an irish traditional song, wonderfully arranged by Simple Minds) with any other of today. This is the same with movies, arts and everything else!! We're going to the abyss....

Simple Minds were iconic. One of the best bands of the 80's. Loved their music.

Dear Jesus! That solo from Sinead breaks my heart..God bless you, child.
  • This song is one of the powerful songs ever recorded. A Scottish Band from Glasgow, ( Simple Minds),, would be the next best outside of an Irish band to sing about the ""troubles". in Northern Ireland. I am Scots on Dads side and Irish Catholic on Mum's . The joint and mixed history has brought with it a mixture of bitterness , but also wonderful music and shared love of very common cultures. Jim Kerr, you are a brilliant.
  • What a performance from everyone. Best band to come out of Scotland period! From an English man 👌

This is a song for everyone but if you’re Irish, from my own heart, you feel it that much more. Amazing ❤

i think this is the best performance of this song that i have seen, especially with the orchestra and the guitar at the end.
  • Life-long Simple Minds fan here. Also always loved the original ballad, She Moved Through The Fair, Cara Dillon version. And Sinead O' Connor had a breath-taking voice... all dovetail here for a magical, wonderful performance.
