  • Love this !! I may have to do a VR to this. I’m surprised to hear you’re not a huge shooter fan?! However, I’ll forgive you for stating that up front just because of the sole fact you dropped Elemental Master right away🔥 that game is top ten material on the whole system! A copy has eluded me thus far, but one day It will be in my collection!!! Also, man, these are all solid picks! I’ve played all of them and they are all sleeper hits! Especially Steel Empire, that one is a great choice for someone new to the genre! Isn’t the library deep for the Genesis ?!! I love it! Well done 👍
  • Wings of Wor on the Genesis (or Gynoug on the Mega drive, as we say here in England) is my favourite shooter of all time. Been playing it periodically for over 30 years and still can't quite beat it. Get to the last level, then get my arse handed to me. You missed the extra life on the first level 😉

I loved this genre when I had a Mega Drive as a Kid. I think I have played every single "shmup" on on the Mega Drive and my favourites are Thunder Force 3, Gynoug (Wings of Wor) and Biohazard Battle (I love the weird soundtrack). I had lots of fun with Steel Empire, Phelios, Chelnov/Atomic Runner and the iconic Zero Wings as well.

Picked up Bio Hazard Battle back in the day on a whim and loved it. Great game with a killer soundtrack. Doesn't get nearly the amount of love that it should.
  • @BuzzsawGaming
Wow really cool!!!! All awesome pics, totally unique and interesting for sure! The Sega Genesis really had it all across all genres. Thanks for the great video.
  • We always called them space shooters growing up. Even if it wasn't in space
  • I have a hard time using Shmups, but I’ve just really learned this term last year.
  • @DadRacer
Nice selection of games, Joel. Twin Cobra is at the top of my list on the Genesis!
  • I'm loving your list here brother! I'm so happy that you included Insector X as well as Bio-Hazard Battle. I think Bio-Hazard Battle is among the few (very few) two player co-op shooters on the system. Air Buster, Forgotten Worlds, Vapor Trail.. umm.. The Earth Defend?! 😬 Oh yeah, in answer to your question: I like to call them "shooters" but others seem to get confused by that moniker, so I feel forced to call them "shmups." It almost feels like I'm using bad language when I say that though! 😅 Great video Joel!

Fantastic set of shooter recommendations here. Love me some Wings of Wor. So many others will bring up the Thunder Force games or Greylancer, but I'd have to put Fire Shark and the Battle Mania games in my list.
  • Fantastic video. The megadrive was a treasure trove for shooters and my absolute favourite was Thunderforce 3. Hellfire and Biohazard battle were close behind.
  • Should be worth noting, if you are trying to find a rom of wings of wor, you can find it under the name of Gynoug which was the name of the game outside the USA. Could never find by it's American name
  • I remember USA magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly calling them "shooters". In the UK we called them "shoot 'em ups". Also worthy of note are Gaiares,, Thunder Force 3 & 4, Truxton, and M.U.S.H.A.
  • I'm not big on shmups either. I enjoy them while playing but never seek them out for some reason. These are some great looking games though! 😁👍
  • @mark6302
Truxton was a shooter that I thought had awesome weapon effects. And Zero Wing was actually pretty cool.
  • @Possible253x
Nice list. Elemental Master is a great game. If you haven't have a look at Thunder Force III, Lightening Force, Gleylancer, and Gaiares which I think limited run is releasing a port for the Switch. Cheers
  • Great list of classic shooters on the Genesis. Yeah, I am old and I call them shooters. It is one of my favorite type of game for the system. A few not mentioned that I also enjoy are Whip Rush, Undead Line, Truxton, Grind Stormer, Hellfire and Gaiares. We all know the popular shooters like Thunderforce, MUSHA, Vapor Trail and Phelios.
  • You know, I haven't played many of these, so I appreciate I'll have something to check out that's new to me. Cheers!
