Adam Savage's One Day Builds: St. Edward's Crown

Published 2021-02-10
One of the ways Adam has been getting through lockdown has been binging television shows, including Netflix's The Crown. And in the midst of his obsession with the show, Adam builds his own replica of the most important piece of The Crown Jewels: St Edward's Crown used for the coronation of British Monarch. Adam's replica is based on the stage prop made for the Hamilton musical, and will be the centerpiece for his King George costume!

As a jeweller, may I suggest a thing about cleaning brass from flux and soldering stains? One of the most effective methods I know is just soaking the part in dissolved boiling hot citric acid. Makes the parts clean and shiny in just a couple of minutes :) Citric acid is dirt cheap and removes most of the stains extremely effectively. You can just watch all the scales and particles flow off your part, and go to polishing almost immediately after this treatment. Just make sure that the acid is really hot. Also, you should "set" your flux with a blowtorch as you are applying it (or just apply it to preheated brass), so that it becomes kinda like a white foam coating. This prevents extra scaling and stain buildup and keeps your soldering joints cleaner.
  • Gem picking-and-placing hack: get yourself some dental wax from the drugstore for $2 and put a piece of it on a stick. The dental wax is sticky enough to pick up your gems, but less sticky than your adhesive. No more gems going PINGpingpingping across the room from your tweezers. One pack of dental wax will last you YEARS.

So you're going to make the Tower of London next, Adam? After all, that's the proper box for the Crown Jewels...
  • "Lets not get ahead of ourselves," he says, putting a crown on a head of himself.
  • Plot Twist: He stole the real crown and played backwards the footage of him taking it apart to get all the gold and gems

"earlier this year.... late in 2019." I like how we're just collectively agreeing that 2020 didn't happen
  • @timbomania8535
With the green felt and the aluminum frame Adam looked like a legit crazy person :D
  • One of my most favorite things in Mythbusters, Tested, etc. is when Adam does something that he is so smitten with he can't help but laugh loudly to himself. 50:45 I LOVE IT!
  • @raffitz
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves" when you're holding a head of yourself is actually hilarious. Prop comedy and wordplay in one, nicely done.
  • Specular = having the properties of a mirror. Iridescent = colours that seem to change when seen from different angles.

I love the point when Adam gets all giddy because everything is starting to come together. Probably the most rewarding part as a viewer 😍🥰
  • @proxxyBean
So it turns out that "heavy is the head that wears the crown" was literal.
  • @Zappygunshot
38:27 when he puts it on, he looks like some alien royalty from an '80s sci-fi series with a severe lack of budget. I love it!
  • By far my favourite one day build. I love The Crown and doing crafts that require plastic jewels so this was right up my alley.
  • @ChaplainNerak
And by adding the jewels, Adam has tapped into every dance mom out there that makes her kid’s costume.
  • @Trufriend61
Adam, you took 2 days, the original crown took 14 months to be made! Fantastic results! It's so fun watching your thought process and your enthusiasm when doing these builds!
