Young count Rostov. I am reading right now War and Peace. It was Bagration with 4000 man countering 17 000 french avangard forces lead by general Murat. Bagration had to slow down Murat so that Kutuzov can unite with fresh forces.
  • What the hell Hollywood why can't you do anything like this?!?!? This is amazing

Ridley Scott stole this awesome scene for his Napoleon movie.

  • To all those complaining remember something. The cost of getting Russian speaking actors is not as financially sound or as attractive to audiences as doing it in English.

    >when you charge hussars against infantry and look away to another part of the battlefield and forget they formed infantry square

I liked this show a lot. A show not vilifying the part of Europe my ancestors are from is quite nice.

I know this is a movie, but it shows well why Napoleon 's army won many battles : in the French army the officers were not choose because of their Name of Birth or degree of aristocracy, they were officers because they were good at war and proved their quality. And also in Russian and Austrian army, officers had to pay their own stuff and horse and even sometimes their men's stuff. Nikolai is a great exemple of this system : Young noble who has never experienced war and think he his strong because he just bought a sword and a horse. But at the first shots he ran away from the battlefield and use his gun in a way that is not recommended in the war manual :D

Nice movie, looks fine. At 2:02 you can see the French had alread formed the square, which as many of you correctly wrote, makes the cav charge destined to fail miserably. However the cav charge it's quite sensible , it's not as some of you wrote: the fog, the open and flat field, that small forest hiding the rearguard cav force ready to ambush makes that an interesting scenario for an ambush and gain a tactical victory. A line infantry it's still quite vulnerable if it doesn't make the square (even in line with bayonet fixed pointed at the cav), so at this point I'm wondering if could have worked splitting the ambush force using a small detachment hide on foot to engage and keep busy the highly vulnerable column to force them in line and then use the cav charge to wipe them out.

    Great soundtrack, fits perfectly.

The musical buildup of this scene is fantastic! This series had some great music in it. Here they seem to have mixed Russian liturgical type of singing with electronic music in the fashion of Vangelis. I absolutely love it!
