(Pt1) Coastal FLOOD Acura?! (Cluster-Shifter-Windows-Seats-Nav...BROKEN)

Published 2024-08-09
This clean 2003 Acura MDX was the unfortunate victim of a Coastal FLOOD in Long Island, NY.

Owner said that he drove it to higher ground, but the SALT WATER made it into the front footwells.
After a few hours, major Electrical GLITCHES started...

-CLUSTER turned off
-NAV screen went blank
-Power WINDOWS and SEATS stopped working...
-Shift Interlock got STUCK in Park!

He tried replacing a connector and the passenger fuse box to no avail.
A year later he decided to tow the car to PHAD to restore functionality.

Let's start peeling back the SALTY ONION and see if we can get this Acura back on the road without breaking the bank...

  • That car will be plagued with green crusties for the rest of it's life! Thanks Ivan!

Pretty cool the owner is quite capable and turns it over to Ivan to sort out. I can respect that and it makes me smile. 👍👍🇺🇸
  • Wow, Ivan, I always admire your sense of commitment to find solutions to automotive problems. In this case, trying to fix a flooded car's electricals is like running down tons of rabbit holes.

That owner had to be kicking himself. All that work and he didn't spot the other hidden fuses. Knowledge equals power. Ivan equals powers and ground

Always something to learn watching your videos

Nice. He'll be glad to have that back on the road for a while - gives him time to replace it. I take it this was filmed way before Hurricane Debby was passing through.... I would have never opened that sun roof, just in case it decided not to close.

Oh no, salt water... This is gonna be absolute chaos!
  • @CedroCron
The patience you have is amazing. Most mechanics would have said "Flood car, no thanks!". Looking forward to the next video!

Shortly after getting my 93 Tracker (from new) I driove it through a rather deep hole filled with muddy water. There was a few inches of water on the floor. Drove it home, pulled seats, carpet, popped the drain plugs, and hosed everythig down. After letting it dry out it was reassembled. I put another 240,000 miles on it after that and the water intrustion was never an issue. I think getting things clean and dry quickly is the key.
  • So the owner knows how to swap a range sensor, swap a fuse box, splice a major harness......yet doesn’t know to check fuses? Lovely! I guess I will now just pay for a 5 hour tow. Ivan...always a pleasure 🙂
  • Flood cars can fail anywhere, anytime as the corrosion dines, and dines well. Send it packing, Mr. Locksmith!

Oh yeah! Weekend case study. Thanks for always teaching us Ivan. This one should be fun.

Best thing for that car is to be a trip to the boneyard. After being dunked in salt water, it will have green crusties in the wiring and will rot out the body even quicker than the winter road salt. Great diag by you as usual.
  • Ivan this is why people seek you out, if it was easy everyone would do it at home.
  • @litz13
When Ivan's shirt come off, you know the car doesn't stand a chance. And really, "this ignition circuit is really key to the problem" ????
  • This is why I always wrote off saltwater flood cars. Of course this one may have been written off and bought back with a branded title. A proper repair would involve removal of the interior and replacement of all the lower electrical and fabric components. No insurance company would risk writing off a car after the repairs failed.
