Mario is Faster than you Think

How fast is Mario in Super Mario Odyssey? Is there a limit to how fast he can go? How are we able to abuse and manipulate the game to make him go faster. Here we explore exactly that, seeing what exactly we can do to make Mario move as fast as possible.

Important Note:
Because I used average speed to calculate the speeds of the different methods in the video, some things may have much higher top speeds then the speed I mention in the video. A good example of this is likely the assist bubble, as I timed from the first frame Mario appears in the bubble to the frame Mario pops, leaving some time at the start and end where Mario isn't moving much. I timed it this way because the player doesn't have control over Mario during the Assist bubble, so to me it made since to include it in the travel time, as it's a drawback of using the assist bubble to get from one point to another.

    Since I probably should have used km/h instead of m/s here's basically all the data points I collected in km/h for those complaining in the comments Mario Running - 29 km/h Long Jumping - 41 km/h Diving - 40 km/h Rolling - 60 km/h Running Downhill - 48 km/h Rolling Downhill - 74 km/h Rocket Flowers - 81 km/h Falling - 97 km/h Vehicles/Captures Scooter - 72 km/h Jaxi - 150 km/h Dinosaur - 77 km/h Cheep Cheep - 43 km/h Gushen - 76 km/h Bullet Bill 104 km/h Banzai Bill - 168 km/h Glydon - 64 km/h "Fling Objects" (Like forks) - 88 km/h Spark Pylon - 257 km/h Zipper - 105 km/h Lava Bubble - 61 km/h Lava Cannon - 116 km/h Bowser - 68 km/h Yoshi - 61 km/h Dram - 320 km/h Warping Sand Kingdom - 342 km/h Bowser's Kingdom - 765 km/h Darker Side - 317 km/h Assist Mode Wooded Kingdom - 855 km/h Metro Kingdom - 350 km/h Darker Side - 1423 km/h Darker Side 2 - 2,441 km/h Glitches Fire/Ice Hyperspeed - 172 km/h Goomba Chain Jumping/Hyperspeed - 154 km/h Infinite Fall Letter - 7200 km/h Infinite Fall Bubble Drop - 288,000,000 km/h
  • Just imagine someone in the 100m dash finals jumping towards the finish line like a weirdo instead of running like everybody else... and winning.

11:43 this means that mario could go to the moon in around ~6 seconds using this method.
  • @Marian_DRG
This was a really good and interesting video! The only thing I kinda missed was the speed mario travels at with those flowers.
  • 11:35 80,000,000m/s is 80,000km/s that equals to 288,000,000km/h But lets focus on the 80,000km/s The earth has a circumference of aprox. 40,000km. That means mario can travel 2 times around the earth in just a second. And now, the distance between earth and moon is aprox. 384,400km, so... mario could travel from earth to the moon in 4.8 seconds. (If you have seen Onepunchman, u should remember saitama jumped from the moon to the earth in 19 secs, that means, mario can travel 4 times faster than that jump) And for last, the distance between earth and mars is aprox 54,600,000km. So, mario could travel from earth to mars in 11 minutes.

never thought someone would be disappointed at travelling 1/4 the speed of light...
  • Never realized just how close to real bullets bullet bills could get. Like, if a banzai bill hit a train, it would probably get derailed.
  • @Flinxmin
Looks like Mario's still got it, breaking reality to go infinitely fast

I love it when teleportation is only halfway through a highest speed video
  • @Wizdabest1
Sonic: "Runnin around at the speed of sound" Mario: Pfft, child's play!

in the instant that Mario leaves the cannon he goes at around 125.5 mph. this was from the xyz velocity given by the mod, and I then converted it based on the speed he was going during your first test, assuming that Mario's running speed is constant and you followed a roughly straight path in metro kingdom I got a conversion factor of 16 whatever units of speed were used is equal to 8.2 m/s so you can multiply the speed the game gives by 0.5125 and you get the speed in m/s. the first frame that he leaves the cannon the magnitude of his velocity is 109.5, and converting to m/s we get a top speed of around 56.14 m/s or 125.59 mph. Of course this is the top speed and he immediately slows down, but for a little bit Mario is faster than the bullet bill.

6:30 For the warps, do you think that Mario actually travels that distance in that amount of time, or do you think that it just cuts out the traveling and skips to when Mario arrives at the warp? Because the screen does go white and loads in the are that you warped to. Other methods of traveling so far in this video dont require loads like that. So we can physically see Mario move the entire distance. With the warp, we only see cappy move a short distance before the screen cuts out and skips to Mario arriving to the warp. There’s no way to confirm that he actually travels that full distance within the load time. Hence why all warps are the same length. Like warping to a warp you are standing right next to takes the same amount of loading time at warping across a kingdom.

CRCs, or happy return cancels can make you go massive distances almost instantly, they're pretty hard but they can go the whole map if a setup is found, which one has been found for all the wires in bowsers kingdom for the min cap run. You should try that out
  • That was really cool! Even tho Mario can't quite hit the Speed Of Light as of now, we can rest assured that he has done it before and truly has no speed limit. You can't run from Mario.
  • i actually appreciate the m/s because i have very little mental ability to conceptualize mph or km/h, but '6m in a single second' is much more easy to visualize. i see where people are upset and can see why km would have been helpful but imo the distance per second was really nice to have too. (perhaps next time have all 3?) super fascinating video, nicely done!

As what Dangers used to say in his Twitch notifications: “Making The Red Hat Boi Go Fast!”
  • @eldersedai870
I expected a joke about backwards long jumps, but the video is still awesome without it.
