Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Japanese manga artist Yukito Kishiro's 1990s series Gunnm and its 1993 original video animation adaptation Battle Angel. It was directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, who co-wrote the script with Laeta Kalogridis. Rosa Salazar stars through performance-capture animation as Alita, a cyborg who awakens in a new body with no memory of her past and sets out to uncover her destiny. Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, and Keean Johnson star in supporting roles.

Alita may be flawed but it showed one important thing: A Hollywood adaptation of an anime can actually be solid
  • it's so refreshing to see the Critic standing up for a movie for once, and actually pushing for the sequel to happen

Having the blood be from an innocent creature she’s avenging rather than from some enemy is really metal and meaningful to me.

The eyes only distracted me for like 10 minutes. Then they were just part of the character. Kinda like how the animation in Spiderverse distracted me until my eyes got used to it.
  • Having not read the original manga, I still have to agree: this movie really DOES deserve a sequel.
  • I actually liked her using the dog’s blood for the marks under her eyes. I thought it showed not only her innocence but the distortion of it - it was unsettling to see the wide-eyed, kind character do such a thing and it kinda tipped me off that there was a darker side to her nature. It also showed her desire for justice for those who deserved it, but never got it. Just my thoughts.

Don't worry..."Boomer will live." We can rebuild him. Make him better, stronger, doggier.

Alita liking chocolate is, I think, actually a reference to the manga, where it's shown that she can basically subsist entirely on chocolate. It provides the sugars her brain needs, while her artificial body otherwise requires little to no nutrients. I thought it was a good touch!

This movie is the living proof that when a director knows the source material, The potential is sooo high!
  • 14:11 i actually think why they made that change: they showed Alita as an idealist that wanted to fight evil and save the world, thinking she was the hero the world needed. nobody takes her seriously and then she gets torn to pieces, showing that a pure heart and good intentions are not enough to survive in a world of cyborg bounty hunters.

I was just pissed that the movie ended on a cliffhanger for a sequel that clearly won't happen now. Also - her eyes make some sense in-universe. Since she's actually Martian, larger eyes would be more ideal for the lower light conditions of that planet (and she may have done some fighting in the outer planets also). If you look closely in the flashback sequences all her companions have them too.

You have NO IDEA how refreshing it is to see one of my favorite YouTube critics review a movie he actually LOVED and mostly pointed out the best elements of it, almost like a CinemaWins video! PLEASE make more videos like this in the future! Also You’re the funniest critic EVER!!!

"By the way you have a giant gaping wound on your shoulder- It's anime rules I'll just walk it off with my angst" So hilarious and true at the same time

I'm rather sad this movie didn't do too well. It was legitimately one of the best movies of last year IMO, and by far the best live-action anime adaptation thus far.
  • My favorite part about the "I give you my heart" scene is how the two of them acknowledge afterward how awkward the moment it was.
  • "Women and chocolate has been done so much cant we get something a little different?" In the Teen Titans, Starfire likes mustard.
  • I have a lot of respect for the NC saying "...Yeah, that's called an anime." Feels like the most loving call-out I've ever received.

NostalgiaCritic: "because its always chicks and chocolates" me (chick): stopped chewing on my chocolate and looked embarrassed at my choco brownie
