I've always liked the taste of energy drinks and for years now, I have wanted there to be caffeine-free versions (specifically Red Bull). However, it doesn't seem like that is going to happen any time soon, so I decided to try and do it myself.

Warning: Please don't try this yourself. Any leftover solvent can be very dangerous to ingest.

I am learning from the comments that there are a lot of people who absolutely hate the taste of RedBull.

i used DCM to extract the DCM out of the DCM and then used some DCM to make sure there is no more DCM in the DCM.

“So why’d you become a chemist?” “I like how chemicals taste”

Hearing teachers tell me not to drink from beakers my whole life and then seeing NileRed chug down his homemade piss water is genuinely so hilarious
  • y'know what NileRed is exactly the kind of guy who would like the "chemical taste" of redbull
  • @marciturani6416
I first thought the title meant that you take out the caffeine, so you can drink the pure caffeine at night

I find that the main flavour contributor to energy drinks is Guarana, the fruit from Paullinia cupana. (Source: I've had Guarana juice) The fruit does contain caffeine, though. So maybe the right way to go about this might be to try to extract the flavour from the fruit and make a soda with it?
  • My god chemistry is insane. Not just Nigel's life choices, but the fact that this is even POSSIBLE. There are so many chemicals and they do so many different things. The whole enterprise seems like a set of amazing and sometimes very frustrating puzzles.

Energy drink without the energy is just “drink”. My guy made drink

For anyone confused how you can talk about the pKa of something without any losable hydrogens, it’s talking about the pKa of the protonated caffeine, the “conjugate acid” (so you just imagine a hydrogen ion on the imide (the double-bonded) nitrogen. The pKa is how much you have to drop the pH (increase H+ concentration) to get it protonated again.

The different taste might just have been just from the carbonation at home method. It always tastes different from store bought carbonated drinks. There’s just something off about things you make with the soda stream
  • @Zappygunshot
The fact that RB has artificial colouring added to it means that they intended for it to look exactly like piss.

I've seen some guides about making homemade redbull and it's essentially a fermented ginseng tea. If you're looking to make this in volumes more apt for daily consumption, try searching for homemade redbull recipes and you'll see plenty online. Great video as always. Cheers!

The most chemist thing I’ve ever heard is “ I drink energy drinks for the chemically flavor”

Yo that was really awesome that they got back to you so quick! And they do that for concerns about copyrights, patents, etc
