Why Catholics Have a Pope

Fr. Mike goes all the way back to Genesis to explain why Catholics have a pope. God established the kingdom of Israel with the twelve sons of Jacob. Centuries later, he appointed David as the king who would unite this kingdom. Centuries after that kingdom was divided, Jesus established a new kingdom by appointing the twelve apostles.

To unite this new kingdom, which is the Church, he appointed Peter as his vicar here on earth. Jesus is the king, but he gave the keys of the kingdom to Peter. This means Peter and his successors play the role of the “prime minister”, or the right-hand-man, or the steward of the king while Jesus is gone.

The papacy may be a divisive topic today, but clearly God gave his Church a pope as a sign of unity for all who are a part of the new kingdom Christ established.

  • Thank you Father. I am a convert to the Catholic Church. From Islam to Christian. I learn so much from your inspirational youtube messages. May God bless you and continue the good work of the Lord✝️☦️🙏

59 years Protestant. Five years Catholic. I’m going to watch this over and over again until it is memorized.

Thank you for this channel, Father. I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school, and received my Masters Degree from a Catholic University. Sadly I’ve been lost, away from the church for the last decade. Your channel has shown me the path back home. I pray the Holy Spirit will guide me all the way back to Christ.
  • I love Father Mike doing apologetics. He has the perfect tone: truthful yet charitable.

I wish Priests would have time to explain or spread very important information as this to us Catholics (during homily perhaps?). Not only does it educate us but it also gives us a "weapon" to defend ourselves when our faith is questioned by other sectors/religions.
  • Saint Peter was the lowest and hard headed out of all of them and yes he denied Christ not once but 3 times and yet Christ still had faith in him. Beautiful story and it only goes to show Christ always picks the weakest ones and those who are struggling with themselves especially the poor. God Bless Saint Peter as well as the other Saints.
  • I of course knew the whole “Peter is the rock” dialogue but the connection to the kingdom of David is completely new to me. Thanks Fr. Mike for making this video and teaching us all!
  • Father Mike you are doing a tremendous job in sharing your faith with all. I am a non Catholic that is now enrolled to start RCIA classes this fall. You're videos have been so helpful.
  • So this guy just overthrew in 13 minutes my whole understanding of the christian church(es)

“In the Old Kingdom there is a prime minister…in the New Kingdom there is a prime minister.” Amen! Hallelujah! Thank you, Fr. Mike! ❤ 🙏🏼
  • Alright I want to start this off by saying I’m non-denominational Christian, yet I’ve binged watched several of your videos today, it’s unsettling and at the same time very “distantly familiar” how I’m feeling when listening to you speak. It’s definitely opened my eyes more to learning about potentially converting to Catholicism. With prayer I know God will lead me down the right path He intends for me. Thank you for your extremely informative videos Father Mike.

Scott Hahn was the first speaker I heard go through this important explanation, but Father Mike does a great job here as well! Blessings to all.
  • God bless you father mike I can’t wait to become Catholic through catechism god bless you and everyone in the comments praise Christ, Christ is king
  • When a priest explains the "church" it makes perfect sense because it's supposed to ... when a protestant explains the "church" it is very personalized based on their own understanding which results in a whole lot of different logics.(IE just stop and think about how many branches of Protestantism there is) I love hearing things laid out so effortlessly and traditionally and biblically true. And the only way that is possible is through the Universal Church founded and began by our Head and Lord Jesus Christ.

  • An excelent sinopsis of a huge topic! Thank you so much for this video, Father Mike. A big hug in Risen Jesus, from San Juan, Argentina!

If one understands the Davidic Kingdom, understanding the Papacy is not difficult. The office of the Papacy is simply akin to the office of steward. Jesus, as the Son of David, establishes his Church in accordance with the Davidic Kingdom.
