9 years ago this month we had the WILDEST week in cartoon history! Steven Universe concluded its first season with the inaugural Steven Bomb, a format that changed the show and Cartoon Netework forever! Alongside this, Gravity Falls aired its game changing season 2 mid-finale, Not What He Seems, revealing the author of the journals: Ford Pines! Between the massive reveals that Garnet was a fusion, the song Stronger Than You and Grunkle Stan having a twin brother, cartoon fans were already on top of the world, but the impact these two events had NEED to be studied! Which is what we're here to do today! Revisiting Not What He Seems and Jail Break (and the other episodes in the Steven Bomb) to unpack just how insane these were for the time and the long lasting effects they had on animation! Also, the Galactic Kids Next Door stunt happened in this time frame! We were truly spliled.

"My friends at my school didn't watch those shows." That hits home.
  • I have such vivid memories of being in line at Chipotle when I got spoilers on tumblr that Garnet is a fusion.

Steven Universe goes so hard after you've had a break from it like this. I've been getting back into it lately and its actually kinda hard BECAUSE it's such a delightfully dense story.

I miss being a cartoon fan in the 2010s. All we had to worry about back then was Teen Titans Go hogging the schedule.

Gravity Falls and Steven Universe were absolutely amazing, when they were airing on Cartoon Network, Disney XD, etc. They both had outstanding storylines that were easy to follow had they both had great mysteries that fans had to solve. Both of these shows were definitely one my favorite childhood shows I’ve ever watched. I’m sad we don’t really get to see shows like this anymore, but back then they were amazing.

Being a fan of cartoons and comics in the 2010’s was certainly an experience. Homestuck, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Over the Garden Wall, The Legend of Korra…we experienced a VERY unique time, for better or for worse depending on the time, and honestly I’m glad for every bit that I was a part of.

Steven universe hits a lot harder when you rewatch it when you’re older, the emotions just feel way more potent, I genuinely remember crying more than once while watching SU recently as an adult, I love it so much. It will always be my favorite childhood cartoon 🩷

Man, I dumped on my at the time gf about both of these. Granted I'm now 37 and we been married 7 years now, but thus was a hell of a week. I still listen to stronger than you. So good

Act Your Age, Men In Uniform, Not What He Seems and Jailbreak within a month is the stuff of legend.

That week was crazy for my small developing kid mind...

Man, I remember telling my friends I thought Garnet was a fusion since Opal’s introduction and them just going “there’s no way she’s a fusion”. That was so long ago…

Gravity Falls finale made me CRYYYY
  • Seeing the arthor and all 3 journals being found was the GREATEST moment of my childhood. Gravity Falls was a huge part of my childhood in the i guess late 2000s.

You guys should make a video about the fact that the Gravity Falls franchise has been stirring so much recently. I think a continuation might be on the horizon. I'd also like to see a video about how you would write a Gravity Falls Amphibia Owl House crossover sequel series.

the reason that there wasn't much foreshaddowing to ice king's backstory is because it wasn't planned from the beginning. It actually (supposedly) was developed during the writing of "holly jolly secrets" when they had ice king dress up as marceline to sing her fries song. they were inspired to build a connection there between the two, and everything else developed from that. It makes sense as at that point they were also fleshing out a lot of other mysteries including how the magic in this world works, and where it comes from. thats the legend anyway

I was 15 years old when the first Steven Bomb dropped. When SU ended I was around 19-20, and now I'm less than two months away from turning 24. It's been wild and I found a fellow SU fan recently. I can't believe I'm this old already
  • I remember Steven universe being one of first thing In my life that helped pull me out of my trauma, I remember it so vaguely being an escape in a time I had no clue what was actually happening around me. It’s the reason I found out about myself and was one of the first steps I took at being my own person. It feels so long ago and it’s crazy that Steven universe made such an impact not only on my life and others too.
