Recently piracy has been a popular conversation around online spaces, leading to animation fans and industry folk alike debating if piracy heavily contributes to cartoon cancellations, placing the blame on fans by extension. So today I wanted to deep dive into cancellations from the last 10-15 years, why they were cancelled and what the reasons were beyond piracy. All to answer the question: Are FANS killing cartoons?

Imagine discovering that Inside Job was cancelled and at the same time finding out Big Mouth was getting another season. I nearly popped a freaking blood vessel.

I really hate it when an entire fanbase gets a bad reputation because of a vocal minority in said fanbase. Can't blame the fans for EVERYTHING.

Fans aren't killing cartoons, it's Hollywood executives who believe unscripted reality shows make the most profit.

Rule #1: Don’t ever blame fans for anything. It’s biting the hand that feeds you.

Being an animation fan today is literally suffering. I have heard far too often “ nobody watched this show” or “toy sales killed this show”. Shows like Close Enough and Infinity Train were killed off before they hit their peak. I really hope more cartoons survive the next decade

The ironic thing is for The Owl House, the creator, Dana Terrace, herself literally told her fans to use piracy to watch her show, The Owl House. She didn't even want to support Disney, despite being a creator of there.

Bro I still aint forgiving Nickelodeon for cancelling Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • @Kittenfox_55
The reality that OK K.O's creator stated himself that Donald Trump ruined the future of his show. And also Trick Moon

How can fans kill cartoons?! It’s like blaming a murder victim for their own death
  • I still blame the networks for canceling all the show like American dragon Jake Long, Harvey beaks, beware the batman, green lantern the animated series, and wander over yonder.
  • Piracy is more a SYMPTOM of wack transmission and scheduling. Cancellation seems nowadays to stem more and more from arbitrary decisions. These companies have big layoffs and corporate reestructuring more often than ever. Everything is more unstable so it just takes the wrong person to not like the show to can it. Toys sales seem to be a weird factor since toy companies more and more don't want merch from 10 and up properties and concentrate on the toddler demographic.
  • I mean, if companies gave fans more opportunities to watch their shows, we wouldn’t have the need to pirate. (Although, I personally avoid pirating unless I need clips for an animation music video). I will never forget Nick and Disney for canceling the Owl House and Rise of the TMNT.

TLDW: US executives hate animation and find trivial reasons to cancel animated media, sometimes it's toy sales sometimes it's just because
  • Fans aren’t killing cartoons, corporate greed and evil CEO’s fault.
  • The fans are never the problem, it’s obviously the executives not reading the room due to have the major demographic be the real target audience for them.

IMAGINE: small indie folks who literally have to pay out of pocket just to build their creations into existence, and generally are less educated in business than art, are showing infinitely more of an understanding in all these regards of how to make animation a legit business than the conglomerates that are gorging themselves on all the money in the planet.
  • @mysteryxio9957
Never understood what people meant when they said "wrong demographic" people watch the show who cares if the person fits into a certain category if people are watching the program
  • @doomlord0773
Probably one of the biggest reasons for shows that are good being canceled is actually the executives canceling the show not actually engaging with the fans. Funnily enough, its because they themself dont actually KNOW why people enjoy it because all they do is have someone tell them the show was enjoyed and then never actually look into it. Its obliviousness to the material and fans that kills shows, because they just.... dont engage with it.

I think the company is the one to blame. There are lots of potentials in every cartoons but due to the company it destroyed the feeling that we used to feel when we were kids.
