Published 2016-08-23
Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker is universally celebrated—and with good reason—but there is more to the character than his excellent performance. In this video I analyze what makes The Joker the perfect antagonist for The Dark Knight.

It is fuckin hillarious how a clown is a lot scarier than villains with superpower.
  • @AM-sp6je
"Is it because of Heath Ledgers excellent performance?" "Yeah" Hahahaha true that
  • @osmium6832
Joker: "I think you and I are destined to do this forever." Considering how often this movie is rewatched and reanalyzed by fans, this is very true in a meta way.

I’d argue that one of the things that makes Ledger’s Joker so compelling is how subtly his weaknesses and motivations are revealed to the audience. Only at the very end of the movie, when the people on the ferries do not try to kill each other, the Joker looks lost for a fraction of a second. That’s when it clicks with the audience how the Joker desperately wants to believe that his ruthless cynicism and loneliness is justified

Seeing the Joker's grin fading away when he realizes neither of the ferries detonated the other is more satisfying than any of the punches in Man of Steel

"The joker isn't a great villain because he has an insane laugh and acts unpredictably". Tell that to Jared Leto fanboys
  • @SidneyJupiter
“Was it just heath ledgers excellent performance?” “Yeah” Well that was probably the shortest video essay I’ve heard in my entire life

Imagine spending hours lifting weights and practicing martial arts, and when you finally have your opponent face to face and you throw a punch to him as hard as you can he starts laughing again and again. The feeling of desperation has to be so vast. The plot in this movie is top notch.

I just understood, The joker actually WON. He achieved everything he wanted.

I hate all the hipsters who hate this movie and can't give any reasons why other than "its overrated"
  • @JohnCine
    The most intelligent Batman movie.

"Is it just Heath Ledger's excellent performance?" "Yea." Love it XD
  • You should say that batman "doesnt kill people" a bit louder so snyder can hear 🤗
  • @gracee8162
I kind of want to see how Sherlock deals with the joker. Logic vs madness. Sociopath vs psychopath
  • Dude, you just gave people the ability to love their favorite movie even more than they already did. Awesome job and incredible insight. Thank you

"Is it just Heath Ledgers excellent performance?" - "Yaa…"
  • @ericofire
can we all agree that the dark knight was one of the best hero movies of all time
  • @GlennDavey
0:12 He doesn't just say "gentlemen" he says "gentle men". Every single line of dialogue was totally studied by Heath, none of it was by accident. A bravura performance if there ever was one.

Truly don't care what anyone says. Nolan's Batman trilogy is nearly perfect in its execution. Not fully, but so very, very close.
