Back in April, RetroManCave held a charity auction for these IBM NetVista PCs he'd restored. Wanting to support the cause, I bid on one of them -- and won! So let's check out the IBM NetVista Type 6792 from 2001, running a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 CPU and 16MB Nvidia Vanta graphics.

RMC: puts FRAGILE on the box Shipping company: plays soccer with the box on the way to LGR's house

I was a graphic designer at IBM at that time. They provided me with an “Intellistation” of the same vintage, I had some screaming graphics cards in it, tons of ram, and the IT dept. later replaced the main chip every time there was a budget, before finally decommissioning the machine. No Ethernet at IBM then, it had Token RIng card, and kept designs on Iomega Zip disks per corporate compliance, but that later changed to a windows network drive. Lotus Notes, Lotus 123, Illustrator and Photoshop were my daily routine. All IBM machines of this vintage are tanks. We used to have them render videos for days with no crashes. Good times.
  • 24:07 Clint: * starts Unreal * Computer: * starting Unreal * Clint: * droning about something interesting * Computer: * plays Sensura sound * Clint: "Wh- what was that? What was that?!" Computer: "Hi! What do you want to do today?"

'Neil you're such a dork' - wow, when LGR calls you a dork you know you've made it.
  • Considering the shape of the box, when you picked up the case and heard rattling, I had nightmarish visions of an expansion card coming loose during shipping and shooting around inside the case, completely obliterating the board, capacitors, and all of RMC's hard work... glad to see that didn't happen!

Dear Clint, Love to see your video's on older computers, i've had a light stroke in 2014 and since then I cannot work that much on computers like I used to, all the older computers I worked on are in your video's so I'm enjoying to watch you work on them, brings back sweet memories ! Thanks very much !!

The sound that played when you ran Unreal Tournament (And crashed the machine) for the first time was Sensura (Like Aureal 3D and EAX) 3D stereo sound being used by that Soundmax intergrated sound chip. I used to own a Hercules Muse XL 4.0 PCI soundcard which on games that supported A3D and Sensura would boot with that sound.

I'm a nurse who works for the NHS so I want to say, thanks for supporting us and our system through the charity auction. We all work hard across the country to keep people safe and healthy and your kindness is appreciated. Love watching your videos and keep up the good work!

That weird sound when the system crashed was the stuff of nightmares 😂 imagine that happening at 2 am. The fact that it ended on a major chord only made it more unsettling ...
  • @kylequinn6695
When it made that weird noise when starting Unreal Tournament, it reawakened my ancient fear of my computer making weird, nightmarish noises that I haven't felt since Win98. shutters
  • @Solarnova
24:07 LMAO. That takes me back to 2000 where my friend tried to play Unreal Tournament on his pathetic Cyrix 133, the weirdest sound ever and then reboot.

Because of retro channels like this I have been going to ebay and trying to acquire all of my favorite gadgets and gizmos from my childhood. My childhood is a bit more recent that most of the stuff featured on retro channels but having those items feels really nice, especially these days.
  • Oh man, this brings back a few memories from school, when they used to have a dozen or so of these in the library.
  • “Running through a bag of chips,” it’s one of those lines you can actually hear and totally relatable with sound card testing.

Well this is a walk down memory lane for me. In 2006, I worked at an IBM spinoff and our lab was filled with these things. I was the System Administrator so I had to touch all of them in some way or another. Seeing this video brought back so many memories. Especially memories of my take the kids to work day. My sons were adorable and they were hauling around these things that were almost as big as they were at the time. Thanks, Clint. you made me feel real good today. I've always loved your channel. Thank you for all the amazing content.
