I believe that by going back in time in the third movie, the Turtles created an alternate timeline. They returned to their own timeline where their future was the next mutation, however the alternate timeline became the tmnt timeline. Similar things happened, but slightly differently, like how Shredder never diced up his helmet.
  • I think the best way to look at this is, the time scepter. Both the show and the 2007 film were based when the turtles were about 18-19. When you mess with time things can always get a little tricky. I feel that because of this reason, the time scepter may have been used outside of the third film possibly causing a rip in the fabric of the universe. The only way it could be fixed is to splice the universe from the first three films into two, or more universes. Thus forcing the turtles from the 2007 movie to be thrust into the future by about 10years, and leaving the next mutation turtles in the "present" i suspect this event would have occured in 1994-95 allowing splinter 2007 to send leonardo away to train where he chose exile for an extra year before the events of TMNT. The way i see it TMNT and the next mutation are two sides of the same coin.
  • At the end of the 2007 movie you can see in splinter's trophy case 1990s shredder helmet and the time scepter from the third movie.
  • For me, TMNT 07 is the 4th film and same canon as the original series. Even if this isn't technically the case, that is how it is in my head. If I have a marathon of the original films, this is always included as the last of the originals.

I always assumed the 07 film was connected to 03 series. The personalities and designs line up. The line when Leo said Shredder’s dead could’ve been when they ended him in the show. But all the Easter eggs seem to line up with the films.
  • I have always seen tmnt 2007 as teenage mutant Ninja turtles 4 because each of the four movies just seem to me at least keep a consistent pattern with each movie being about each of the turtles learning some kind of lesson to become a better team The original movie: Leonardo learns true enlightenment and becomes a better leader for the team Secret of the ooze: Donatello learns that even though there creation was an accident they were meant to be there in short he learned that knowledge isn't everything Turtles in time: Michaelangelo learns to take things more seriously as much hate as that movie gets you half to admit that before the last Ronin this was the most serious we ever saw him in short he learned to be more mature TMNT: Raphael learns to control his anger you can tell in the fight scene between him and leo that he knew he went to far and he regretted it he learned that he needed to focus his brothers and not his anger if you really focus on all four of these movies by the fourth one you can see the results of their lessons at least that's how I see it they keep a consistent story so id say there connected as for next mutation fuck that it ain't canon

I thought the director or artist whoever created the film was just paying homage to the earlier films

Perhaps the events of the trilogy DID happen in the 2007 universe, but with slight differences here and there. Thus, it allows 2007 to serve as a sequel to the trilogy, but also allows it to be in it's own universe as depicted in Turtles Forever. I suppose you could also apply that same logic The Next Mutation if you want.

I hate to be the one to point it out, but if you had clicked on a few more links instead of just the one that popped up first in your Google search, you could have given a definitive answer in your video. The Next Mutation indeed is meant to be a continuation of the original movie trilogy. Many ideas from that TV show, including the title and the concept of a ‘fifth Turtle’, come from a proposed, but ultimately scrapped plan to do a fourth movie. It was in development, but after Turtles III tanked, movie studios were hesitant to touch the property. That’s when Saban Entertainment stepped in with their low production values. They made Super Sentai work in the US with minor retooling (as Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers) so surely they could make a success of this Next Mutation idea for TV... Ahum. The basic idea of the fourth movie was that the mutagen in the Turtles’ blood would continue them to mutate beyond their current form (a concept that was touched upon in the comics as well). Also, it would include a fifth Turtle named Kirby, a creation of Kevin Eastman. This idea in itself wasn’t very original, since there already were multiple mutant turtles beyond the four brothers in different media, including Tokka in the second movie (a snapping turtle). So the reason the Turtles look so different in the TV show that we ended up getting can be attributed to them going through a continuous mutation, even if that concept isn’t utilized any further. Then again, the writing was so bad, you shouldn’t be surprised Shredder rose from the dead again (I actually think they reference that in one of the episodes). The Next Mutation was marketed as being an edgy new show in the vain of the movies, not the 1987 cartoon. The show even had a tag line saying ‘this is not a cartoon’, so anything but subtle. Heck, even the original cartoon wanted to be like the movies, as they used fragments of the 1990 film in the opening credits for the last two seasons (Red Sky seasons, as they’re known, mimicking Batman The Animated Series). TNMT from 2007 was also meant as a follow up to the 90s movie trilogy (it was at least marketed as such), but set years later. Splinter’s trophy wall isn’t just easter egg fan wank, it was a nod to the long-time fans this movie takes place within the same continuity - and had nothing to do with the 2003 series. Kids who hadn’t seen the original movies missed that, but it doesn’t matter as it doesn’t follow up on any story threads of the previous installments. Other than The Next Mutation, however, this CGI flick does acknowlegde Shredder’s demise, with Karai leading the Foot Clan. So The Next Mutation and TMNT aren’t in the same continuity, rather two alternate futures (albeit they don’t really contradict each other either). The fact that some story elements or visual cues do contradict each other makes sense, since there was so much times between these productions and different people worked on it. It should be noted the original cartoon contradicts itself all the time, even with the same writing staff and story editor.

Shredder's helmet seen in The lair in the 2007 movie Is very reminiscent of Shredder's old Helmet from the 1st Movie of the Original Trilogy So, yeah pretty sure it's Connected Pete said what he said cause he wants to make us think
  • @matban9082
My theory (More of a headcanon) is that Next Mutation happens 2-3 years after the original trilogy and a few months after season finale of Next Mutation Venus dies/sacrifices herself in an invasion (Most likely from the Rank) of the Subway Station lair. (April is working in the shipping company that she worked in 2007 TMNT, throughout the Next Mutation. About a year after, the turtles have relocated to a different lair and have drifted apart because of the tragedy, then the events of the 2007 film take place
  • Here in Brazil, the 2007 movie is called "As Tartarugas Ninja: O retorno" translating it becomes "TMNT: the return", so i always assumed it was somehow connected to the 90s films
  • @webguy943
Actually their different appearance in tmnt 3 can be explained cuz the ooze is constantly evolving them so it makes sense the turtles to look slightly different.
  • @acceptable1609
I always thought TMNT 2007 was connected simply for the reason that the opening narration mentions them defeating Shredder and if you look on Splinter’s wall at the end of the movie the helmet sitting there looks like Shredder’s 90’s movie helmet.
  • @henith7850
I do agree that tmnt is in continuity with the first three films ignoring next mutation as everything adds up timeline wise with the first three movies and tmnt.
  • I can and do accept that TMNT 2007 is a sequel to the first 3 movies. It's a better follow up than Next Mutation.
  • They're just really similar universes with shared past details
