The theme song for HBO’s “Succession” has made its way to the top of the list of TV-show intros that you can’t skip. The song's composer, Nicholas Britell, perfectly distills the show's themes into the song. He also has a background in hip-hop, and that may be one reason why this orchestral composition is surprisingly something you can dance to. We break down the song to pinpoint exactly why this track gets stuck in our heads.

the feeling isn't the same, the songs are totally different, and the reason why the succesion theme stucks with you, is because it makes you feel power, it's unique and elegant.

HBO really brings that "don't skip intro" energy. Sopranos, The Wire, Game of Thrones, True Detective, Last of us, Succession... Never skipped intro once. Amazon has a lot to learn.

Most of the people in the comments haven’t even seen show. You folks have no idea what you are missing out on.

Succession is like "The Big Short", the narrative style, camera angles and the dialogues. It's the reasons why it makes me glued to the show.

At the start of the first season I didn't know how I felt yet, but I loved the theme music so much it got me to keep watching, day later and I've finished season 2 and is one of my new favourites, all thanks to this theme. I've never heard a theme so that so accurately depicts the tone of the show, which as I see it, is playfully bleak, mwah chef kiss a thousand times

I’m glad I’m not the only one who keeps the song stuck in my head.

The thing we forget is that the melody credit needs to go to Beethoven — it’s the same key, same chord progression and almost identical melodic notes to the Pathétique piano sonata composed in 1798.

Nice analysis, but did you need to spoil Season 1’s ending to convey your message?

Nicholas Britell created a masterpiece. The theme sets the tone for the show and its spirit in the very beginning.

This show is amazing and yes, that song gets stuck in my head....a really fascinating analysis of this theme....

It's my ringtone since last year.

I think a further layer of analysis for this theme song might be that it combines the old (orchestral music) and the new (hip-hop) in a way that’s jarring and unnerving. Kinda like how it’s unnerving to watch as Logan’s empire is threatened by the new and the family becomes increasingly unhinged as a result. So I tend to think of it as embodying what I see as a central theme of the show, at least plot wise.
