India China Border Standoff: New Delhi Switches Its Approach | Vantage with Palki Sharma

India's stance towards China appears to be hardening, with recent events indicating a move away from appeasement and towards a more assertive approach. This shift comes amidst an ongoing border standoff and China's unwillingness to de-escalate tensions. One key indicator is the absence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit currently underway in Astana, Kazakhstan. While Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders are in attendance, India has chosen to send Foreign Minister S.Jaishankar instead. This move is seen by some analysts as a deliberate snub, signaling New Delhi's dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. Jaishankar himself has hinted at a change in India's approach. He emphasised the need for "mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest" as guiding principles for New Delhi's relationship with Beijing.

Further evidence of a tougher stance comes from India's economic relationship with China. New Delhi has reportedly rejected Beijing's request to resume direct passenger flights, which were halted during the pandemic. India has also taken a bolder approach on issues sensitive to China, such as Tibet and Taiwan. China has predictably condemned these developments, but India appears undeterred. Palki Sharma tells you more.
