Looking forward to watching your build. Want to do this as well, but thinking of doing one of the kits from Bargain Musician as a first attempt. They make a lefty Explorer!

Ken Boudreau uses superglue to give an MDF template a hard edge. It makes them harder wearing and less prone to damage.

The Crimson ones aren't bigger, but I think they are harder.
