I'll admit that Super Princess Peach could be something of a hidden gem. It's not the greatest Mario game of all time, but it's got some novel ideas, and the gimmick of emotions as a game mechanic is a decent idea. Plus Perry and the Army Hammer Bro are pretty neat original characters. The Koopalings being scrapped is quite interesting. I noted the fact that it's the last time we saw Iggy's original design before he was altered, and the fact that Roy's shell is green.

It's funny, these old sprites look a lot like the shading and designs found in GBA game, like Superstar Saga, but the early screenshot show the game already designed for the DS, so I'm not too sure.
  • There were so many fan games in the late 2000s that used the unused Koopaling sprites from this game. I specifically remember Super Mario and the Dismal Heart, which for whatever reason gave the Koopalings remixes of DK64 boss themes, and also has Count Bleck as the main villain. It's very obviously fanmade and has a lot of scratchy audio, but I still remember it fondly enough.

Thank you for showcasing my sprite sheets in this video! Seeing the many early graphics for this game, I would love to see a prototype build

That Japanese "engineering" translation is not right. It's actually "enkei sono 1" (えんけいその1), most likely "background number 1". Maybe it's a background scene with Peach and Mario?
  • @Donuts-n5g
Im pretty sure the original idea was to make a princess peach game that has the yoshi island style seeing all the times enemies and even spitres look a lot more like yoshi's island and even the final koopa tropa sprite looks like the one from yoshi's island

Omg my childhood! I remember seeing ads for the game in a kids magazine when I was younger. It was supposed to release pretty soon after and I begged my parents for a copy. They didn't buy the actual game for me, but they did put it on my R4 card. I freaking love this game
  • @MantaNebula
The えんけいその1 (enkei sono ichi) would be "Background - Part 1". Presumably its a placeholder for the first background of a scene with Mario and Peach that would've changed to something else.

Don't get all emotional on me now, TetraBit.

funnily enough I actually mess around with the koopaling sprites around a lot, they’re very weird lmao Roy attacks you with his sweat. Iggy bends down showing you his…butt for some reason, and for some reason he gallops like a horse lmao. and Larry fails on a belly flop lmao not to mention some of the sprites are clearly not done. Roy is missing a right arm, Lemmy I believe is missing a ball despite missing having ball balancing animations, and Roy and Larry have shell spinning animations but they don’t have any sprites of them coming out unlike Ludwig. And speaking of Ludwig, he’s a definitively a weird case, as some sprites of him are missing heads and it makes them very look very off putting, such as his shell animation, may require someone to use a bit of effort. And here’s a funny fact about Bowser, and this was like, before this game started getting more sprite rips. Bowser was actually using his unused palette on his final sprite sheet before getting it changed to what was intended lmao, I honestly knew SOMETHING was missing with him.

Engineering 1 could maybe refer to Nintendo EAD1, one of their dev teams/studios. Game was developed by Tose but maybe EAD1 did some design stuff early on.

Bruhhh this was my favorite game as a kid! Thanks for covering it
  • @Lynn17
IDGAF what people claim about the game being "unfeminist" because of her emotions being a power, this game was amazing and the only flaw it had was lack of closure for Perry and his backstory.

Peach in main games: Mario! Help! Peach in spin-offs: choose a god and pray! (Note: this isn’t meant to mock Peach’s character, just poke fun at the difference between when she’s playable vs being an NPC)
  • @leahluostarinen
I've actually never played Super Princess Peach before but it does look pretty good though 🙂

I’m just gonna throw this out there, but I feel like this entire game was inspired by a possible cut plotline in Super Mario RPG: @classiccustoms2010 commented his idea in response to the unused sprite of Peach crying: “When you show off the image for the prison scene, I believe Peach may be crying. That sprite of Peach where she was fake crying may have gone there. My theory is that, in development, there would be a point where Mario was captured and perhaps separated from the rest of the party. I believe that Peach may have been intended to go and save Mario. As a ploy, she would fake cry to get the attention of the guards, which appear to be Hammer Bros., before initiating a battle with them. Upon winning, she'd either release Mario, or perhaps she would need a key to free him (if one of the guards didn't drop the key upon defeat; I don't think that kind of mechanic is featured in Super Mario RPG, but this was during development too, so who knows). Obviously this is a bunch of speculation based off of a single low-resolution image, but that's just my two cents.” I believe that this theoretical plotline might have been the inspiration behind Super Princess Peach.

The precision of the colored wheels, suggests that it's a rotation guide, for the modular boss sprites. (so, more programmer art) The weirdly rotated versions, seem to line up with how some of the animated frames are stored, in the game data. Converting to & from radians, when you're animating such a complicated object, is... really not fun. So, I can see why they'd make such guides. I've done it myself, lol.

Wow already? Edit: I thought this was Princess Peach Shotwtime lol
