In 1992 Pepsi ran a contest in the Philippines that ended up killing 5 people.

The contest was called Number Fever, and the idea was simple:

Every evening the news would reveal a winning number, and if you had a Pepsi bottle cap with that number, you won a million pesos.

Pepsi had a system in place to ensure that there were only TWO winners each evening. But May 25th 1992, something went wrong...

Hundreds of thousands of Filipinos "won" that evening.

Pepsi was now expected to pay ten of BILLIONS of dollars in prize money - a debt they claim was impossible to pay.

a single computer glitch caused a whole ass revolution over pepsi💀

Now that's how you do a video. No robot voice. No annoying extraneous crap. Just right to the meat of the story. Thank you.

My grandma actually was one of the 349 people but didnt join the protest and stuff, she was just really upset

If they were smarter, they would have covered their behind with small print like "total payout is $X and will be equally divided between all winners."

I was still 7 when this happened. Me and my friends would scavenge the trash pile just to look for pepsi caps even after the raffle ended. And I also wondered why in my childhood Pepsi was more popular than coke before. Now I know.
  • @Nightenstaff
You know the part of this that probably isn't considered much? Two people who did have the rare "winning" caps never got their money since the 349 was drawn instead of the indented winning number. What an odd twist of fate.

I have friends from there. Hundreds committed suicide over it. They were at the end with nothing left, then this amazing event only for it to be taken away & they just.... ended everything for themselves. Very sad
  • That's completely insane, one little mistake caused so much chaos

Im a filipino and my dad was around during that time, one time during dinner i asked him why isnt pepsi isnt as popular as coke so he explained to me that pepsi used to be very popular in the 90s and something happened, but never told me about the deaths and injury.

I had no idea this happened, great video about it, informative and to the point. Thanks.

I guess they all switched to Coca Cola after that.
  • Imagine being in the bathroom as a pepsi employee and a molotov cocktail just bursted outside your stall.

This is how to make short documentaries! Very clear and precise
  • its not even Pepsi’s fault for the deaths. If the people would just accept the fact that they didn’t win no one die
  • @naptuness
My grandfather worked for Pepsi around this time. Apparently my mother’s family was receiving death threats because of what had happened. Luckily, my grandfather quit his job so the situation wouldn’t escalate. I just wanted to put that out.
  • @expired267
My mom was around that event during that time, And she told me back in the day she didn't buy it, and expected the event to be a scam and false hope, when I asked her about this event, she just laughed it off saying "I knew it was a scam the whole time, that's why I didn't participate in it that time" Edit: Ok now there's"Who asked?" comments
