Lyrics:
Who's gonna tell you when
It's too late?
Who's gonna tell you things
Aren't so great?

You can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong, oh no
Who's gonna drive you home
Tonight?

Who's gonna pick you up
When you fall?
Who's gonna hang it up
When you call?
Who's gonna pay attention
To your dreams?
Who's gonna plug their ears
When you scream?

You can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong, oh no
Who's gonna drive you home
Tonight?

Who's gonna hold you down
When you shake?
Who's gonna come around
When you break?

You can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong, oh no
Who's gonna drive you home
Tonight?
You know you can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong, oh no
Who's gonna drive you home
Tonight?

There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.

One of the most beautiful songs of the 1980’s. Benjamin Orr sang this perfectly.

I remember laying in bed at 2am as a teenager listening to this on my Sony Walkman. I had my whole life ahead of me.

This song was on top of the charts when my dad died. I clearly remembering it playing on the radio as I drove home from the hospital....still so young, at 56. Fast forward 37 years, as my 91 year old mom is getting ready to finally rejoin dad, this song resonates now, as much as it did in 1984.

To all the people listening to this song who are battling loneliness, heartbreak, loss, addiction, mental issues or depression: at least one is thinking of you and wishing you well. You are worth every living moment. You are worth being comforted if only with this song and the heartfelt words of a stranger who is one of you. Even ships that pass in the night can see each other’s navigation lights. Stay strong, try to love yourself again, keep faith and spare a moment of your thoughts for me. Peace be with you my fellow human ❤️

I'm driving through the hills of North Carolina in the summer of 1984 in an old Chevy with friends listening to Drive not even getting the true gist of Ben Orr's words and never thinking twice about our parents. We had all the light and dreams of our future. What we wanted to be. Who we wanted to date. Where we wanted to live and travel. But then, we became our parents and one day we wake up to life at age 56 and yearn for that summer of 1984 when everything was in slow motion and sublime. We didn't have a care in the world. Our moments were fleeting. And four decades later, we gaze back at our youth with plucked heartstrings of just how lovely those moment were. We miss the people that are gone. We miss the people we were and ask ourselves if we have truly done something with our life. In one refrain, in one melody, a song becomes our time machine and we are back for few minutes giving us pause to live forward with intention and love.

This song feels like "crying" and "regret" and "loss" and the utter "sadness" of things that can never be healed.😢
  • Danced to this on my wedding day in 1984 with my lovely wife who was my soul mate. Now taken from me. Until we meet again my love. Stephen x

One of the greatest songs from the 80s. There aren't many songs that make me feel as nostalgic as this one.
