North Carolina State Senior Owen Lloyd posted the fastest time in the Men's 1650-yard Freestyle, earning him the ACC Title, an automatic entry to the National Championships, and a new best time. Moments later, an announcement was made that Lloyd had been disqualified for "interference with another swimmer."

The rule(s) at play from the NCAA rulebook:
- Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1a: "Any competitor who interferes with another swimmer during a race shall be disqualified from that race, subject to the discretion of the referee..."
- Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1b: "A swimmer who changes lanes during a heat shall be disqualified."

this sport does damn near everything in its power to disallow fun
  • @Aestareth_
who let a reddit moderator become a referee
  • The worst thing is he was celebrating with his friend who ALREADY finished the race

Man, that female reporter is freaking amazing. We all need someone like that in our corner. Her level of empathy is priceless
  • @SenorCircuit
This is the perfect example of some try-hard ref enforcing a rule but completely and utterly ignoring the spirit of the rule. Obviously no interference was caused and the swimmer in that lane was already done. Insane.

This feels like getting a 0 on a test because you spoke with your friend after you were both done

Alt title: Swimmer gets disqualified for being happy.

judges are just salty they haven't done anything even near as important in their lives
  • @mausk01
Next time he wins you know he will not celebrate again; this is how you kill someone’s happiness. So sad.
  • @DMP64
Literally everyone is against that decision, the fact they kept the disqualification tells exactly who they are.

Imagine you take the drivers test, park, get out and start walking to the building with the driving instructor to see if you passed and they're like "Sorry kid, you walked behind a vehicle in the driving area, you failed". The vehicle was your friend's who was parked and was getting out. That's how much sense this makes.

99% agree he won 1% Rule robots say he should be ashamed for mocking the sport
  • @jackbaxter1795
As an experienced Swim Coach myself I understand the rule, however if both swimmers have finished the race, referees need to apply some common sense. Every winner in swimming history celebrates like that! Pathetic officials.

The guy who ended up taking the technicality saying he’s not taking the medal is a serious friend and shows amazing sportsmanship
  • This is what good sportsmanship is all about. His opponent defending him with strong resolution is what the world needs more of.
  • @jacktjong4797
The biggest injustice is that this ruling was not reverted. That guy lost so much to the judges being petty assholes, and it hasn't been rectified. Way to go guys, just keep ruining sports...
  • Holy shit. This is crushing. What a perfect way to absolutely discourage future athletes from wanting to compete.
  • This sort of stupid technicality is what happens when idiots judge by the letter of the rule, rather than the spirit of the rule. The NCAA should have gotten involved and corrected that. His harmless celebration is NOT what that rule was put in place to prevent. A complete injustice.

Imagine training for years just for the judge to end you up like this
