  • instead of showing us the masks that failed, why not give us the masks that passed so we can have a trusted seller to buy from
  • This is literally the government's job....nobody in Canada should have to guess about the safety of the products sold here.
  • In summary: Check for: 1) manufacturer's name and address to look up on-line their registration and certification 2)FDA logo not allowed 3) unmarked packaging Don't buy from resellers. Buy from dealers with a history of PPEs. Check if your mask is authorized by Health Canada or the FDA. Search the CDC for a list of counterfeits.

Nothing in this messed up world is to be believed. It doesn’t matter what said, written, or sold!
  • I mean they should never have been sold in the first place, but kudos to Walmart for at least removing them promptly. Very surprised at Well's response.
  • @journeyca
What about the good ones? Half of them passed the test. Why not tell us what we should buy? I don't need an investigation to tell me there are bad apples in the market.
  • The reporter mentioned Korean-made ones but didn’t conclude the result. That misleads people.

There are 2 aspects to protection, one is the filtration efficiency, many masks do not meet those requirements, but more problematic is the fit test. This is a test that determines how well the mask seals against your face. This is very difficult if not impossible to do with ear loops, which is why proper N95 masks all have head bands.
  • I'm so happy that this problem is being brought to light. The CDC also has a list of manufacturers whose respirators were given emergency authorization. A good rule of thumb would be to buy from that list since the products have been tested by the CDC for use in a healthcare setting.
  • The professor's comparing the mask fails with a student failing a test by 1 or 2 points is like comparing apples to oranges. A student failing means his attempt was useless. The masks being 1 or 2 points below does not render the mask useless. It would still be good for most everyday uses by none medical professionals. Certainly better than cloth masks or the open sided "surgical masks like Walmart hands out.
  • When I was shopping for N95 masks, those made by 3M were not available for shipping to Canada. I ended up buying KF94 made in Korea.

Dear Marketplace, I f*ckin' love you guys. Thank you for all the hard work and research you put into your remarkable videos. I truly do wish Marketplace would create its own YouTube channel, since I have no interest in general CBC News as a whole, but a TON of interest in any and all Marketplace videos.
  • It seems good that anchor is following social distancing while interviewing people around. Great work by her
  • It would have been best to state which mask worked, and where they could be purchased?
  • Just stay in the house, that’s what I do lol bc I can’t trust anything at this point
  • @GPSniper1
well it is very late now. it should come out 9 months ago
  • Has anyone ever done any studies on wearing a coffee filter inside of a mask? Coffee filters also work inside of masks and then masks last longer. I also find it helps oily skin that way. Also, if you try to blow out a candle with a mask and are able to blow the candle out, then it probably is not safe.
  • You know what fail? Putting the mask on your chin, ear or even in your side pocket. 🤣
  • Firstly, if there’s ear loops there’s not an N 95 mask there. Head straps provide for a better fit and then it goes on and on from there. My perfect fit is the 3M 8210
