With an appreciation of flow and motion Peggy's life has been always been driven by passion. From surfing and skateboarding to the intimate appreciation what she calls the 'Cetacean Nation'. Discovering the transformative force of participation artwork through her Origami Whales project was the first step to realising that passion could be harnessed, amplified and ultimately inspire for a deeper purpose.

Surfer, Skateboarder, Artist and Activist.
Once the only female member of the famous Zephyr Skateboard team from documentary 'Dogtown and Z-Boys': Peggy’s love of the outdoors inspires her to travel worldwide in search of good surf. In 2004, she founded the Origami Whales Project to raise awareness about commercial whaling. She has also developed the Whales and Dolphins Ambassador Program and led campaigns such as ‘Let’s Face It’, which petitions to save New Zealand’s critically endangered Maui’s dolphins and Hector’s dolphins.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

  • I don't know about you but when I see her, I see such a beautiful and shining lady.... Someone who loves life and is so down to earth. I want to be like that... Naturally beautiful, happy and inspiring.
  • I really don’t get how us, as one of the millions of species this beautiful planet has, focus on destroying instead of living together and building together. We have to spread love and peace. Let’s have a beautiful place to live in like we did millions of years ago. Where we depended on one another to survive. We are all connected.

I love how she is smiling constantly while talking. Makes me smile too. Such a positive person ♥️
  • Beautiful. So true. Sometimes we try so hard to find our purposes in life, instead of just being calm, follow our hearts, take the cues endowed to us along the path, without questioning too much
  • This is what a TedTalk should be in my opinion... an experience that changes you that you can share.

“It’s turning passion into action that can change the world” “Follow your heart with visions and actions” I needed to hear this today💕
  • She's done so many amazing things, she's so well-travelled and her art has touched so many. Yet she seems to have zero ego. It's so refreshing. Love how she helps the beautiful whales, orcas and dolphins. It is sad that humanity can be so cruel and selfish but thankfully we have souls like Peggy Oki's, too.
  • As a result of this video I made a small donation to the sea Shepherd conservation society. I hope that it will contribute to saving at least one of these magnificent creatures.
  • People like her cause me to dream of a life do-over, I want to go back and do it all over and follow my passions. I know I had passions and creativity earlier on, and now having more life behind me than ahead, I'm trying to find passion again.
  • I was also a female surfer/ skateboarder in Santa Monica a few years prior to the Z-boys. I also am an artist that does animation. I had a dream last night where I was in a boat trying to save whales and then went to a circus trying to help elephants escape! I stumbled upon this video after having a pity party about my future, dusted off my tears trying to embrace my inner dolphin!!
  • I was encouraged by her quote, "Follow your heart with vision and passion and you will find your purpose in life."
  • She. Is. Just. So. Cool. ❤️ Her vibe, passion and soul just... I really feel it.❤️
  • I love her laugh and her absolutely perplexing youthfulness. She’s in awe of a whale and I’m in awe of her. Everything about this sentient being is pure Love. And since Love is reflected in Love, I am seeing myself in her.
  • I do not cry during many Ted talks, but did with this one. The passion she transmits from her being is so beautiful❣️
  • My parents didn't know how to encourage me to do what I loved, so I grew up hesitant about my passions. They weren't supportive if I mentioned arts, like photography or music. They were only interested in such fields like medicine, finances, so I had to find what I liked in these field. I love psychology, but I hardly imagine myself working in that area, I see myself as a calm, sensitive, loving and caring person. I love nature and animals, singing and writing poems. I am 31yo trying my best to come find my true self and it is not an easy process. Sometimes I think it would be the best if I cut out any contact with my parents, because all they care is do I have a good paying job, but they never asked if I feel fulfilled and happy.
  • Who is disliking this? This is a phenomenal effort not only of empathy but of action and catharsis. Lots of people spend their time angry and sad over things that they feel helpless to change. This woman leaves a legacy of compassion kindness and togetherness and you don't approve? She is inspirational and ahead of her time. Thank YOU resilient soul!

She is enriched because she is tapped into something deeper and has found a higher purpose outside of herself. She is not concerned with superficial and trivial matters that a lot of us in the west are concerned about. She is rally rooted and you can feel it.
  • She's the literal definition of good vibes. Her beauty on the inside matches her on the outside.
