I've been on bit of a sound design kick of late and not much has changed here except that I'm being super blatant about it and really only discuss that element. For a show that I had no expectations of, this wound up being a great watch and a lot of that is thanks to the brilliance of Shōjo Kageki Revue Starlight's sound design. Let's talk about how it empowers it's narrative and hints at some character elements.

From one episode, things seem pretty eclectic. We get perpetual major sevenths at school paired with choreographed character movements, but we get this pretty fast paced battle sequence in C minor at the end. At the very least, music is marking genre in these sequences. Two moments that stand out a lot are the breaks towards something artificial or synthetic -- there's the pure sine wave in the Tokyo Tower sequence and the focus on artificial and mechanical construction / duplication of uniforms during the transformation sequence. Definitely excited to see how this patterns itself throughout the series as a whole.

Man you channel is criminally underated, you make great analysis on the shows, you get your point across without much circle around and have a nice tone of voice for this kind of videos, you deserve a spot next to arcada and gigguk on anime community

I actually avoided the spoiler here and watched the first episode first. Almost two minutes in I was already sure it was going to be about the music. It stood out for its rhythm, its presence & its sudden change near the end. However, while watching the episode I did not realize how important the tower scene was. Sure, I noticed something was up, but I could not pinpoint the exact reason. And here you are talking about exactly that! So ehm.. Thanks! Its absolutely fantastic to have those details explained!
  • I just discovered your channel and it's amazing! Both your channel and Revue Starlight are extremely high quality and underated.

I was the first to suggest this and for good reasons, it's been on my radar for a long time and I'm glad it made an impact. Though extraneous to the topic of this video I feel bound to praise the superb shot composition present throughout the episode(with particular attention to symmetry, I'm a sucker for that) and uncommon camera angles (more a keen to Hyouka than anything), which renders even the more slice of life scenes visually engaging

Really in-depth and through look at the sound design of episode 1 which was also one of the gripping elements that drew me in. I wonder if it might also be interesting to look into the specific "Revues" that happen and how the songs/set design / characters all come together to make them work. Either way, keep up the great work.

I haven't even finished the first half of your video and I already subscribed.
  • Really nice video. I didn't look too much into this anime before I started it either, so the last five minutes completely blew me away. I definitely need to rewatch the first episode now to catch everything I wasn't noticing.
