In the world of education, teachers are a tool to help put you on the best academic path there is, so that you can grow as a student. However, teachers do a lot more than that. There are some teachers that go beyond the scope of just "academic" help. Dr. Jacquelyn Ollison addresses the issue of compassion fatigue, and how teachers suffer from the emotional labor of serving their students. Jacquelyn Ollison. Ed.D. is a committed educator with extensive education experience as a teacher and school site and district administrator. Aside from her tenure as a teacher, school Principal & Vice Principal, she also coordinated numerous educational programs. Dr. Ollison also served in the California Department of Education (CDE), co-facilitating and supporting workgroups whose recommendations were the impetus for current education climate initiatives and interventions. Recently, Dr. Ollison earned her doctorate at the University of the Pacific. Currently, she serves as an Education Administrator for the Equity and STEAM Office at the CDE and supports the State Superintendent’s Closing the Achievement Gap Initiative. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of the Pacific, Gladys L. Benerd School of Education. She lives in Northern California with her husband, three stepchildren, and her dog Seo.

  • Well said I am a teacher an I know what this burnout feels like I worked with kids with autism . I will tell you that program directors and administrators don't understand that what you putting out daily dealing with hurting parents and children takes a big part of your well being I hope more people understand what this is and support teachers .
  • We hosted an equity meeting early last year addressing this very topic. Our focus was on Teachers Mental Health, looking for ways to support teachers in the classroom who handle first-hand trauma for their students. Providing supportive services for our teachers is imperative to prevent teacher burnout and or depression. Great work Dr. Ollison!

Thank you for your TedTalk. This topic is an important one as educators continued to teach and support students during the pandemic through distance learning. Now more than ever do we need to acknowledge compassion fatigue in educators and provide them with the necessary training and support for their collective well-being.
  • This is such an important topic, thank you for raising awareness and providing concrete solutions. If we want kids to succeed, we hae to take better care of our teachers! Social and emotional learning strategies can be powerful for educators and students, the strong focus on relationships is an important starting point for caring for eachother and ourselves.

  • Thank you for sharing about this very important topic! In 2:35 you talk about how children living in high poverty experience PTSD at a rate 3x higher than Iraqi war veterans. I'd love to read more about that - are you able to share your source?
  • If this is important to you please go to Marianne 2020 and consider supporting her. This is one of her main policy areas.
