In this video, Abhi and Niyu discuss the economic impact of heatwaves on India.

In February and March 2023, temperatures in many parts of the country have crossed 40 degree Celsius. This means we have a hot summer ahead. A hot summer means impact on agriculture and as a result on the Indian economy.

What is a heatwave?

A heatwave in the Indian context refers to an extended period of abnormally high temperatures that occur during the summer months, typically from March to June. Heatwaves in India are often characterized by temperatures exceeding 40°C and are associated with high levels of humidity, making them particularly dangerous for human health. They can also lead to crop failures, water shortages, and power outages, among other problems. In recent years, heatwaves in India have become more frequent and intense, likely due to climate change and urbanization.

How does a heatwave impact India?

Heatwaves can have a significant impact on India in several ways. First and foremost, they pose a serious threat to human health, with the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions being particularly vulnerable. Heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration can lead to hospitalization and even death. Additionally, heatwaves can exacerbate water scarcity issues in India, as water sources dry up and demand for water increases. They can also cause power outages as the demand for electricity rises, further compounding the impact on human health and well-being. Finally, heatwaves can have a detrimental effect on agriculture, with crops being destroyed or failing to produce due to the extreme heat and lack of water.

  • Wonderful, Abhi & Niyu! Beautiful film about an ugly fact... Hope it moves & shakes us citizens and our governments to act... Climate change is a reality and WE need to act... If not us... who? If not now... when!?
  • @AbhiandNiyu
Let's make sure all of us water the trees around us in this scorching summer heat 🙏
  • I am from Kolkata and still holding on to the non AC life decision. People find it weird many at times but am just trying to contribute less towards making things worse. Now i have this vlog to support my decisions and motivate people towards green living. Thanks guys wonderful work!

Materialism -> Wealth -> Energy -> Entropy -> Global Warming. Funnily all major Indian religions proposed way of living is about having low entropy but comes at cost of lower wealth. Mimetic theory will ensure we will let entropy win. Eventually. Human population and wealth grew when we figured using all forms of energy to benefit. Only species that uses most energy formats to grow itself, comes at price when you become top agent of entropy.
  • Finally someone is thinking critically about the heat problem of India .... Hats off to you both....
  • @ShwetaankS
You guys are critical for India's future, given you are educating us!❤

This is so true- last year it was very tough for me to go to school in 45C and stay there with just a fan. I couldn't even survive heatstroke with fan and here our workers doing work in 45C. I hope we can all deal with this problem.
  • @A.P...
A big thanks to my old generation who saved some land for us. Today we have option to build apartments or halls and give them on rent but my father didn't do these money making things instead of this my papa planted trees like neem, awla, aam, amrud jamun, anar, keenu, beil and awesome thing is that we grow vegetables for us in both summer and winter without any chemical. My father is retired worker from IOCL and our maximum money goes to grow vegetables and have to take care of them. My Father is nature lover and we have big garden of different flowers in our backyard. One more thing I will add here that we don't have any AC in our 7 big rooms 🏠. Yes we feel so heat in summer but we have only fans and natural air. We don't have any car and we use public transportation for long traveling. And this small contribution towards our motherland gives us happiness. ❤️

  • Hi Abhi I am Canadian Citizen and love your videos about India , couple of things I would like to mention about this Video. 1- Death toll data due to heatwave you mentioned year 2015 , would be relevant to know last couple of years old data. 2. Would be better if you just mention source of data in the bottom of page when you show the data. Keep up with the good work 👏

Fpr past 8 years who left India for their future, many of them were saying that heat will become unbearable. They were complaining about summers are becoming unbearable. They left India and said foreign countries are way cooler. I believe on geographical conditions of our country but no government is taking initiatives on it. Finally you make the video on it. Kudos to you!!!
  • Thank you Abhi and Niyu for raising awareness about the heatwave in India. It's great to see content creators like you using your platform to highlight such important issues. I appreciate the efforts you've made to share information on how to stay safe during these extreme weather conditions. I'm glad to hear that you're already taking steps to reduce the impact of climate change by planting trees. As a suggestion, I think it would be great if you could also share some more tips on how to reduce heat and mitigate the effects of climate change. For example, you could highlight the importance of using renewable energy sources, reducing plastic waste, and more. I would love to see you encourage more of your audience to take action and support environmental initiatives in their communities. Personally, I'm planning to do my part by conserving energy at home, reducing my carbon footprint by using public transport, and spreading awareness about the impact of climate change on social media. Every little effort counts, and I hope that together we can all make a positive impact on the environment. Much love to you and once again appreciate your efforts :face-red-heart-shape:❄

i stay in Danmark. I went to Sweden for some office meeting and ask H&M manufacture manager 'why not you manufacture here in sweden' .Exporting cloths to Bangladesh (export hub), Pakistan, china or India and then manufacturing there than back to international market. Though most top notch brand belong to nordic countries. His simple reply was garment processing cause lots of water/Air pollution and in a long term it harms labour also, because minor tread which fly in air during clots processing is a major cause of kidney and cancer related disease. This means government says health is first, sometime i feel we still slavery because of our mindset and gov.

  • I was planning for rooftop gardening many times before , but never did it because of busy schedule , but I will do it from today.😊 for saving our society and ecosystem, we all should take immediate steps at our initial levels.

you should follow Singapore's campaign Keep India clean and green. I read that Singapore used recycled waste and grey water to water all her plants in public areas and if you look at pictures, it is so beautiful. Why doesn't India do that? The air quality in Singapore before the fires of Sumatra was so clean. Some people who I know who visited it were amazed that for such a heavily built up city it was so pure. Just a thought.
