I always want to take an emotional performance over a studio version of a song if I can help it, and this is one of those instances. I am overjoyed I got to hear and feel Chester's pain in this performance of "Given Up" by Linkin Park. So chilling, and so revealing!

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Linkin Park performing "Given UP" for the first time.

  • It's not a character, it's HIM. That's the sad part. His suicide shocked everyone, but he'd been telling us how he'd been feeling from the very beginning. Those emotions were 100% real and 100% his. He didn't need to act anything out, and that's what makes listening to his music that much more gut wrenching now that he's gone. It wasn't acting, it was catharsis.

The thing is, with Chester, it’s not a character, it’s actually him. When he hits himself in the head, it’s not an act…it’s how he actually feels. It’s the reason he’s no longer here, and it’s not only tragic, but a massive loss to music.
  • Every time he sings, you hear him go from being youthful and almost scared, to being angry. And it’s just sad how 1 man could save millions but not himself
  • Songs like this hit so much harder because it wasn’t an act he was singing about his feelings … rest in paradise Chester
  • Ever since Chester passed no song sounds the same as it used to. Every single song he wrote was a cry for help while the songs he wrote were salvation for many of us. As I saw in another comment, "1 man saved millions, but millions couldn't save 1 man. RIP Chester..

The live cover Chester did of Rolling in the Deep with only Mike behind him on piano is amazing. He poured his heart into everything.

As a child psychiatrist who hasnt listened to linkin park i about 15 years, it amazes me how pure and honest Chesters expression of raw emotional pain is. So tragic he didnt find the help he needed. I hope you found peace chester.
  • He actually lost the scream this time and had to break when he dropped down - normally he carries it through before going back to clean. However, this is the most emotional performance I've seen from Chester - and that's saying something. It's understandable that his technique would slip slightly. I can't imagine the headspace he was in. He gave 110% to every single performance both physically and mentally.
  • Chester Bennington in two sentences: The voice of an angel The scream of a Demon RIP Chester 🤘🤘
  • He wasn't acting, he was trying to spit the poison out. He drew it out of hundreds of thousands of us instead. Ty Chester.

I'm not entirely sure how i got here, but here i am. You commented at the end of this video about how you could see people finding it cathartic to find music like this. That is extremely true. I wouldn't still be here without Chester. In highschool my mental health plumeted. Long story short. Chester is who saved me. His music, his lyrics and the emotion in his voice. He made me feel like i wasn't alone. And i was, and still am, somehow able to align myself with him. When i listen to his songs, it's almost like i'm along side him. When he does his incredible screams of anger or rage or sings his words of sadness and loneliness. I can feel his emotions release, into the air, just free and gone. What's more, my emotions go with his. It's like his voice tears the emotion he's projecting out of me and is released along side his own. This ability turned out to be double edged however. When Chester passed, all my thoughts focused on one thing. If he couldn't beat the demon (depression), how could i? He saved my life and i have no doubt, thousands of others. However, in the end, he succumbed to the demon. I fell into a dark hole when he passed. Much like the one he pulled me out of to begin with. I ended up seeing a psychologist to try to get help. I can't say i'm good now, but the psychologist made me focus, instead of what Chester and I had in common, what makes us different. What Chester went through and what made his situation entirely different to my own. It doesn't mean i can beat the demon. It's a fight that lasts a lifetime. What it means is that i can use Chester's music just as i always did. As a salvation. Without comparing his struggle to my own. We all have our own struggles. Just because one person lost, doesn't mean we will all lose. In life, every time you go to sleep and wake up the next day, is a day you beat the demon. Let the darkness be dark, Chester is my light.
  • This is a way better Chester experience for you than the first song you did, so much emotion
  • Chester never needed to get in "character" he was always in character sadly. he was the voice that a LOOOT of us didn't have. one of my fave Linkin Park song
  • I didn’t realize until now I’ve actively avoided listening to Linkin Park since Chester passed away.... now I know why. Fuck I’m gonna need some quiet time after this. I was able to find the peace while still being able to breathe that he never found himself. And his music helped me do that. I wish it helped him in the same way😢
  • @NozdormusRage
People always bemoaned those artists from the bygone years of the early and late 2000's, saying they were just attention seekers, but people like Chester prove that wrong. They suffered and wrote about it. Their lyrics weren't cheesy or manufactured, but real cries for help. It's sad, but here we are.
  • The craziest part is if you watch the AOL live sessions of this song he actually holds the ENTIRE scream instead of stopping for breath. Absolutely wild. Miss him so much and this is the song that hurts the most
  • Hearing "Put me out of my misery" over and over doesn't make me feel uncomfortable. It makes me feel not alone. I only wish there was literally anything anyone could have done to make Chester not feel alone...
  • The way he sang "wrong" in the chorus still gives me shivers every single time. Chester was an absolute one in a generation genius.
  • I’ve struggled with the same thing that took Chesters life since I was 9 years old. This man’s music saved my life multiple times. The battle is never over. RIP Chester 💔
