1985-1986 season.
The 2nd seeded Cardinals go against the top seeded Blue Devils for all the marbles.
This is the game that officially thrust Pervis Ellison into "legend" status as the freshman scores 25 pts and grabs 11 rebounds to lead the Cards to their second National Championship. Birth statistics would indicate a 78% upswing in the frequency of newborn males in the Louisville area being named "Pervis" during the twelve month period following this game. Ok not really, but there should have been.
Final score:
Cards 72
Blue Devils 69
Marv Albert and Billy Packer bring us the action.

This U of L team had mad chemistry. 2 sharp shooters and excellent forwards. Billy Thompson had matured into one of the better all around players in Basketball.

This was the beginning of Duke basketball’s excellence under K. They would go on to make 6 of the next 7 FFs from 1988-1994, including 2 titles. By then Duke was a household name and love or hate um, most know the rest. Fun trivia: In 1985, the year prior to this tournament, Duke had a highly seeded team upset by Boston College in the 2nd round. They were coached by Gary Williams, who would go onto be a thorn in his side at Maryland. K got the better of it in the long run but quite the history between long tenured coaches. After that ‘85 upset Duke had really become Duke.

If you look closely at the very end, after Jeff Hall steals the final inbounds pass, inexplicably drives to basket and gets partially clotheslined by Danny Ferry, Hall chucks the ball at Ferry's legs. LMAO

I was there ! Best time ever!

A true heart breaker for the Dawkins and the Devils.
-
Please bring back the classic Louisville jerseys!

I had a brutal childhood ( like a lot of kids did ) but the 80s louisville teams were the most important things to me by far.

So weird it being 86 and NCAA not having the line.

At 4th Grade this was the first March Madness that captured my imagination. No one talks about this game as a huge upset in NCAA history. Believe this was the 1st Personalized Basketball designed for the Final Four, the First Championship Game with 45 second shot clock and the last college basketball game without the 3 point line. Thank you for posting this.

A lot of great future coaches, announcers, and gms on that Duke team. Amaker, Bilas, Snyder, Ferry, and Dawkins.

It's Duke nation on always and that's my good word 💯💯💯
-
Nobody is messing with duke and that's my good word 💯

When I see this and then watch our current team lose to Furman at home, it makes me wonder if we are ever going to get back to the top of the mountain.
-
Both Johnny Dawkins and Tommy Amaker went on to be college head coaches, and in fact are still coaching today.

Goo cards!
