I just realized that Pikachu and Charizard cowering in fear when that Gyarados evolved from Magikarp is indeed a reference to the intimidate ability.
  • Let me bring attention to the fact they started with a shot of bird pokemon flying over the town- y'know, like how the games tend to start.

I love that this movie wasn't just pure nostalgia bait, like every pokemon was just from gen 1. It was truly a love letter to all pokemon fans, regardless of where you started at.
  • I think it would’ve been funny if “Who’s that Pokémon?” was a talk show.
  • @TheRealJahan
Tbh we don’t need a Detective Pikachu 2, but we DO need another Pokémon movie.

A non-Pokémon fan talks about how great Pokémon is for 20 minutes, this guy is Arceus' gift to humanity.

"Dark type Greninja gets hit with psychic type attack...must have protean..." "I'm not at all an expert"
  • @arivera167
The first best thing about Detective Pikachu is that Ryan Reynolds played Pikachu without cursing every five minutes

"I'm not the biggest pokemon fan but..." 10 min later.... "Dark type Greninja gets hit with psychic type attack...must have protean..." Ok guy sure lol 😂😂😂

Also giving mewtwo two voice actors, male and female bc legendarilys have no gender.
  • Another win at 5:49: In the Gen VI games, Pokémon have a sweet spot where they like to be petted in Pokémon-Amie. Pikachu's sweet spot is the chin. Nice reference there.
  • A neat little nostalgia trip is that Jigglypuff in the bar which is a reference to the reoccurring Jigglypuff in the classic pokemon anime which used a marker as a microphone and when it got mad that everyone fell asleep when it was singing It'd puff up and then proceed to draw on everyone's faces as revenge even in the movie the mic marker has the exact same green cap

I still feel like the original artist doesn't get enough recognition. He started doing real life pokemon oh deviantart and then contacted by game freak and nintendo to do the lead design for the movie. Absolutely amazing!

I liked the movie, but I don't want a Detective Pikachu 2. What I want is another Pokemon movie with this tech.
  • Did this man just imply that Garbodor isn’t the cutest f*cking thing on Earth?
  • Team Rocket: [wears a mustache] Ash: I've never met this man in my life. Team Rocket: [removes mustache] Ash: NOW THIS IS AN AVENGERS LEVEL THREAT!!!

Fun fact:Mewtwo doesn’t move their mouth when they talk, but when Howard was controlling Mewtwo’s body, they do move their mouth like a human.
  • 8:27 Something I love about this screen is that Giratina (the banished one) is not present even though it is one of the box legendarys. This really shows that the makers of this movie actually really know about Pokémon lore.

This movie is one of the best when it comes to world building. I've heard the argument that this movie didn't do any world building because it was done in the games/anime but the world built in the movie feels uniquely its own. World building isn't just about telling us whats in this world, it's also about convincing us that the world is lived in and that there are stories going on outside of the main story.
